Martin Luther King was assassinated by a white segregationist on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. James Earl Ray is convicted and sentenced to 99 years in jail. King's last words on that balcony were directed to musician Ben Branch, who was to perform that night during a public meeting attended by Martin Luther King.
