Racism is often defined by discrimination towards a specific race or religion. Due to a range of sports being played throughout the world, and athletes from different religion, races, and gender racism has certainly been in sport throughout its history. During the period of 1991-1997, footballer Ian Wright often found himself in the centre of the focus for racism. Nearly 20 years later in 2015, famous top competitor footballer Mario Balotelli found himself receiving 4000 plus racist comments on social media.

Effects of racism in football?

Racism can deny development of a range of sports, one of these sports being football. Players from different religions and race from Eastern Europe and Asia often find themselves at the centre of not only verbal racism but physical. Professional Zenit player Hulk found himself at the centre of a racist insults during a professional football match. When Hulk when to take a free kick, the opposing teams fans made racist noises and threw objects onto the football pitch in attempts to insult him. This type of racism on pitch can hinder players from developing into a better player thus increasing the ability levels in football.
Insults to these professional football players from fans not only affect the players but also affect other members stadium who witnesses these racist insults. This antisocial behaviour and racism in the stadium can often result in other spectators feeling uncomfortable and can turn them off attending a football game again. It can also make the stadium have a very negative atmosphere which affects the performance of the players on the pitch also.
Racism in sport however, which is not only in sport but in the world as a whole, has advantages as it can unite players and fans from across the world to help fight against racism. This is proven by massive organisations and campaigns designed to remove racism from football. The most famous campaign being 'Say no to racism'. This unites fans and teams to bring a much more positive atmosphere to football matches and anybody caught discriminating anyone would be removed and banned from attending another match.
In conclusion, these huge campaigns which are often ran and promoted by the Football Association often cost millions to run and promote. This is a huge negative for football as a sport as this means their would be less funding for other sectors of football such as new competitions and stadiums. This would decrease the pace at which football would overall develop as a sport as less facilities and members of the sport would have no or less funding due to funds being invested into fighting racism.
