How to recognize ADHD symptoms in children

There are 'steps' to see if your child might need a check up for ADHD. Children with ADHD usually don't listen even when they're spoken to. They have a tendency of losing things, failing to follow instructions and making careless mistakes. A child with ADHD will have a hard time sitting without fidgeting and overall being very hyperactive. If a child has had these symptoms for over six months, it is likely that your child may have ADHD. If your child only acts like this in certain places, it might be something other than ADHD that causes them to act like this.It is important to acknowledge the seriousness of this because ADHD may cause problems in relationships between the adult and child.

If your child is having behavioral problems, and are unable to do certain tasks and end up lying about it. For example, finding cleaning a room too overwhelming, or lying about homework saying that they didn't have any or anything of that sort, that's when a psychiatrist should be involved. They'd do a full medication evaluation to see if they need medication for ADHD. This can be essential especially if they are unable to function normally in school and at home.

The parent asked how can ADHD be defined and an example that the expert gives is impulsiveness, which means that they do things and say thing without thinking about it. A child taking medication has an impact on their anger, it mellows it. ADHD is a complex disorder. Environmental risks are important in the prenatal early postnatal period because it's an early onset disorder . There isn't an exact environmental factor the may causes ADHD. There is a link between autism and ADHD and schizophrenia. With ADHD medication, there is a balance, meaning that there are positive effects of the drug and negative. Some negative can be that there may be a loss of appetite and sleeping may be harder.

In a classroom, a child with ADHD has to be provided with positive feedback/attention, as well as organization and structure. The lessons should be organized in a specific way and other things like the child's backpack. During lessons teachers should grab the child's attention. They should be given attention for something that a teacher would take for granted in regular students (for example, staying on task, or staying in their seat).

Whenever a child is diagnosed with ADHD, the first treatment is usually to change some of the functionally impairing behaviors for the child. Behaviors like these may vary from being unable to concentrate and pay attention and drifting off. In order to help a child, everyone in their daily life has to be on board to help out. For example, a teacher can help a child self monitor their actions for example teach them to not interrupt but to raise their hand. With ADHD, these kinds of actions can be taught to control and can be fixed.

Although a reason for ADHD hasn't been found yet, it is believed that it has a strong genetic component. ADHD is a neurological glitch related to frontal lobe process or the executive function. The executive function is used to plan, organize manage our time, focus concentrate and regulate emotions. A child with ADHD inconsistently manages all of these functions. The executive function stops developing until the age of 18, which means an adult with ADHD might have less pronounced symptoms.

Typically the medications of choice are stimulant medication and non stimulant medication. The most common stimulant medication vary from Adderal, Ritalin, Dexadrine or vyvanse. Some of these medications can be long acting or short acting. A doctor may sometimes combine the medications depending on what will fit best for your child. At times a child is can't tolerate the side effect of the stimulant medication, and in that case a doctor may recommend a non stimulant medication. If a parent chooses to put their child on medication it is important that any changes in behavior or if any symptoms occur that the parents make note of it.

Since 2004, there has been increase in children diagnosed with ADHD. Most doctors and psychologists follow the guidelines. But that may not mean that the child has ADHD. In most cases, the diagnosis was based on the family's report and not from other people that are involved in their life (for example, teachers, coaches). Children nowadays are getting diagnosed at a much earlier age, almost half are diagnosed when they're 6 years old or younger. ADHD is much more than just being hyper all the time, since children are usually excited to learn more about the world around them and the people.

How to discipline a child with ADHD

The ADHD medication only treats the symptoms but not the cause of it. The actual cause lies in the various brain systems involved sensory motor processing communication and such. Parenting a child with ADHD requires commitment more than a typical child may require. Parents should try to maintain a positive emotional tone. Positive kind tones help build the relationship between the child and parent. Parents should limit the authoritative system and the dominant submission depending on their child and how their brain works. Teach the child different 'rhythms' since children with ADHD are typically very disorganized. One example is a turn taking rhythm, this can engage the kid in a dialogue to talk back and forth with the parent. This helps organize the parent-child relationship.

What I have learned from this project is that over-diagnosing is something that happens often. I would assume that there would not enough kids that aren't diagnosed, because that is what I've heard, that girls aren't diagnosed often enough compared to boys. I've learned a lot, that there is a specific way that you have to act with children with ADHD. For example, how parents should create routine for them because it makes transitions easier for them. As well as keeping them organized as well as their things, will prevent them from playing or behaving chaotically. This is just interesting how you have to be very specific with how they behave. I've seen my friends that have ADHD, its interesting to know that there are other alternatives than just medication because all of the people that I know that have ADHD, take medication. So it's interesting to know that there are other options, like behavior therapy. Since I know that there are many parents that are against medication, some people that I know in my life. And although I know that untreated ADHD may lead to other mental health issues. Which shows that it is important to diagnose ADHD at an early age and treat it appropriately.
I didn't know that you can actually see on the brain that a person has ADHD. That on a picture it has a different color or that it has an actual difference.
