Unfortunately, black people were not really freed, according to the article, " Racialized Poverty- The legacy of Slavery" black people were often in contracts controlled by former white slave owners and forced to take out loans that they could barely pay back. With this it lead to poverty really seeping in the community. One can assume this is because of systemic things that I have been put into place to disadvantage black people. Another can assume that it is because of laziness within the black community and low motivation to change lifestyle. HBCUs also known has historically black colleges and universities are colleges/universities that were created for black people and hold a higher percentage of black people in attendance. It is now more important than ever to have black people in HBCUs. The benefits of being in a HBCU is that black people are allowed to thrive in a community with people of similar backgrounds so that can increase motivation.
