In many cultures, teachers are highly respected and are seen as experts. For example in China, teachers are respected just as much as doctors are. In Finland as well, teachers are highly respected and trusted, and are given a lot of freedom. If an EL is from one of these cultures, their families may not be as "involved." In some ethnic minority families it is also thought that parents are responsible for home and teachers for school, which is important to keep in mind.

Families can and may be involved in different ways. Many of the ways that we expect familes to be involved, revolves around middle-class families. Bake sales, PTA meetings, and fundraisers can not and should not be expected of all families. These are not the only ways that familes can be involved, so they should not judge a family's engagement. Families may also be involved by teaching them things abut their culture and society at home, or bringing their kids to work with them. Overall, educators cannot be so quick to judge a family's involvement, instead try to understand a family and their background.
