What's important when it comes to assessments? How and why might we need to go beyond memorization?

Teacher 4: Change the way we look at assessments

with students' unlimited access to technology and answers, what are we assessing them on? They have access to how to spell anything or basic math facts, but so do regular people.

We shouldn't teach them to memorize anything because regular, non-school aged people don't have to memorize anything, especially for SPED students

Change assessments to reflect that

This also allows teachers to assess students on more in depth, complex ideas instead of focussing on memorizing the basics

The idea that students have access to all of this information opens up opportunities for teachers to push students beyond what can be Googled

Requires them to think more critically while also using the information at their fingertips.

They not only know the information, but know what it means and how to actually apply it

Considerations...: Teachers, particularly SPED teachers, have had to evaluate which standards are most necessary and weed out the ones that are able to be skipped. They have to choose based on the following 3 criteria:

"Endurance (which skills are foundational and built on year after year?)

Leverage (which standards provide students with the most essential knowledge and skills?)

Readiness (which standards prepare students to be ready for the next level?)" (Considerations of District and School Admin...)

Wasco SPED: Mario Uresti stated about the very beginning of the pandemic, "Whatever packets were provided, we knew some students would be on top of it. There's another population of students that we knew they weren't going to do it."
