         <description><![CDATA[<div>The story the biochemist, Cori, left me feeling shocked when it was revealed that one of her discoveries would end up being what killed her a decade later. I was impressed by the fact her husband and Cori had fun researching new chemicals and discovering things such as lactic acid, glycogen, and countless other chemical reactions. I thought that their discovery of the Cori cycle was remarkable since I remember reading about it during the time I was taking biology and chemistry. However, reading about her illness with anemia and discovering what it was left me feeling sad, but what surprised me was finding out that she didn’t let her illness keep her from continuing to research with her husband. <br><br></div><div>A “wow” moment I had while reading about Cori was on page 17 when she and her husband found out they had won a Nobel Prize “for their discovery of catalytic conversion of glycogen” in 1947, and in the same year she found out she had a rare form of anemia. Two things happened to Cori in the same year, probably the biggest two moments of her life. Even so, she continued to go into labs with her husband carrying her. This left me feeling inspired after I read how she spent the last few years of her life </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>It was very inspirational to hear Taussig’s journey and obstacles she overcame throughout her career. From being denied an education and degree for being a woman, to being ignored and not taken serious when she announced new ideas that could save lives. Never did she give up even after many rejections and the belittlement of educated people. Her research throughout the years, her perseverance, without her and her input, where would we be? I have to question all the people who doubted her, and failed to give her a chance, why?!?! Why deny the opportunity of someone who is willing? Also, to the ones who did give her the opportunity to hear her out and take on her ideas, i wonder what made them open to it? She has given so much of herself, time and knowledge to the world of cardiology. It’s always a delight to hear these stories of success. In the reading, she admits she had many unsuccessful operations, “background of hard work”  but that she has “done more good then harm.” This is encouraging words to the ones who have only heard of her successful operations and successful ideas, that behind all this “successful ness” there have been many trial and errors that we just don’t think about. She is an example of never give up. If she had, how much longer would we have to have gone for without her data/research and importance she gave us. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>One thing that I was curious about from these chapters would have to be how difficult it was for Hilde Mangold to achieve what she did with so little. The tools that she used were an ultra fine thin glass, low power microscope and a strand of a child’s hair. I cannot imagine how difficult it may have been to achieve so much when starting out with so little. </div><div><br></div><div>One thing that I found interesting from these chapters would have to be how Helen Taussig came up with the crossword method. It seems crazy to think that before coming up with the method, doctors would not be able to really do anything about patients with heart issues. Eventually the patients would pass and they would figure out what went wrong with their heart and would record observations. Despite how crazy that was, as a result Taussig was able to create the crossword method. By using this method, she would be able to use a set of clues from the patients to figure out how to treat them or diagnose them. This would be similar to going to the doctor today and saying “my symptoms are a, b and c” then being able to treat whatever the issue is. With Taussig's contributions, they stood as a blueprint to what medicine is today. </div>]]></description>

By the time she had died in 1986, she had published  40 papers post-retirement, served as the American Heart Association's president, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. <br><br><br></div>]]></description>
