In my family, anytime you are getting a cold, you are told to rub some Vicks vapor rub all over your nose, your chest, and on your feet. Apparently, that works wonders. And if you have a stomachache, you either drink a sprite or water with lime. However, if you just say you have a headache then you're told it's because you're on the phone too much and to just tie a large sock over your forehead. As an adult, I know to use real medicine because none of that would ever work for me.

For as long as I can remember, my grandma would constantly have yard sales so many times a month. She would even go to other yard sales, try to get things cheap, and sell it at her own yard sale for more. She would even sell Mexican candy in her yard sales. She also has goats and other animals which she would sell. As a kid we would get to choose a goat and pick them as a pet, I would pick the mom goats because then the babies would be mine. If she sold your "pet" then she would give you half the money she got for it. She always taught us the importance of hard work but would also remind us about "work smarter not harder".

Every male in our family knows about carpentry and can fix anything in the house. As kids, you're taught a few things here and there so by the time you're and adult you can do it all. Many of my uncles buy property, fix up the houses, and rent them out. My dad knows how to do anything with wood. He builds kitchen cabinets for my uncles because none of them know how to do woodwork like that, but they know about actually building the houses and how to do electric work, which my dad doesn't know. Everyone in the family has one thing they know better than someone else and they help each other out. I was never taught any of that because the girls are taught to cook and clean. However, I am stubborn and try to be independent, so I at least know how to build things with instructions.

My parents are both born and raised Catholics and so are my sisters and I. We have gone to Church every Sunday morning since childhood (stopped for some time due to Covid). My parents, sisters and myself are all baptized, have done our communion and our confirmation. We hold yearly celebrations called "Nacimientos" where we dress baby Jesus, pray, sing songs, and celebrate Jesus's life. It is one of my favorite things to do with my family (extended included) as we are all together celebrating the joys of being here with each other. Religion is one of the major things in our family as it has brought us peace and blessings.

Growing up there has never been a role in my house solely based for one gender. When I was younger I learned to clean, cook, and learned how to build things. My dad has been a construction worker since he was 15. Since I could remember, I would constantly watch him build new things for our house and he would include me in any way he could. When i was smaller I obviously couldn't drill or paint well so my dad at first would include me by having me hold a flashlight when it was dark, or refill things for him. Doing these simple tasks always taught me so much about construction because even though i was doing little tasks he would tell me what he was doing. Now, I've gone to work with him multiple times, paint my own room, habe painted our house before, and often help him build dressers and other things for the house. One time we even built a patio together with two of my other sisters. I've learned so much both hands on and hands off from my dad. When he come home and talks about work hearing him say what he did at work intrigues me and expands my knowledge as well.

Medicine

Growing up I was treated with both medicine and remedies from my culture. My mom is a nurse so she always knew what to do in times of need. If I was feeling sick to my stomach she'd give me sprite and a piece of toast, if I had a cough she'd lather me in vicks. But when my symptoms couldn't be reduced by remedies she'd give me medicine. I remember having to take the nasty cough syrup, pepto bismol, and ask I got older she'd tell me to take some advil. As I've gotten older, I still revert to these remedies.

Household Management

My parents both work hard towards having a nice, clean house. For as long as I remember, I always saw them both cleaning almost everyday to make sure thing were in order. The also both worked together in forming a budget. I have really learned from them in this way. Seeing the way they have saved their money has helped me as I've started to live on my own. I realized that I have really become like my parents in this way.

I have been able to learn different recipes from my mother, and how to tweak certain recipes to get that special taste that everyone loves. It is the same with my grandmother, and I have learned how to make cakes, sugar cookies, biscochos in the same way they have made them.

Budgeting

Since budgeting is not something that is taught often in schools, much of what I know comes from both my parents. My mother was and still is the person who controls the money in our household, and I have learned how to manage a bank account and everything financial from her. It makes it even better that she has always worked in financial jobs, so the knowledge is all the more reliable. As for what I learned from my father, I learned how to keep my costs low for my small business, and how to make back my money from what I have created.

Being a catholic religion is the foundation of what I know and who I am. I was born catholic although currently I am a non practicing catholic (when you don't go to church). I grew up saying "si lo quiere Dios" (if that is what God wants) and learned all the aspects of what it meant being a catholic and the devotion of it and was something I did not want to practice as a teenager because I did not want learn it because I had to and being told it was something I should want to learn about the Catholicism. Everybody I knew was a practicing Catholic and it was expected of me as well however I was allowed to learn on my own and find my own connection to this religion and has become something which is important.

Baptism-

I was expected to do all the practices of a catholic baptism, first communion and confirmation and actually my confirmation was something I did as an adult because I wanted it be something I chose not because it was chosen for me. In actuality this is where I learned that that everybody has their own opinion of what religion and how religion has to be done.

Agricultural

Growing up my father loved gardening even though he spent a big part of his day doing field work. Whenever he got home our bonding time was going out to the back yard and helping him tend to his plants and do any yard work that was needed. We grew chilies, tomatoes, tomatillos and even helped him graft an orange tree to give limes and lemons as well.

Cooking

Whenever it was time to eat dinner i made sure to help my mom cook her meals, so I learned how to cook certain dishes that my siblings don’t know to make. These dishes include orange rice, mole, Chile rellenos, and hand made tortillas.

For as long as I can remember, I have watched my mom in the kitchen. Making us breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner, etc. I always loved being in her space and watching her creativity flow as she created new dishes. Everything she would make always tasted so good and her reason was always that "lo hice con amor", she made it with love. I think my love for cooking and food all together stems from the memories that it brings of my mom.

Agriculture

Most of my family has worked in agriculture, including my parents. Whether it was grape fields or any other produce really, as far as I remember, my parents would come home sweating, and with dirt on their clothes from a very long day of hard work. I personally never did work in agriculture because my parents didn't want me to continue in their footsteps and instead encouraged me to focus on my education and obtain a career, I was passionate about. However, that being said, all the talk that my family has shred about the field conditions, weather making either the working day easier, the different hardships of every produce field, the distinguishing exactly what kind of the produce was being grown even if all that able to be seen is a sprout, the different time of years meaning the harvest of different produce and in what ways, etc. have all seemed to get stuck in my head and is known a fund of knowledge that I hold because of my family.

My parents worked full time jobs and both parents, especially my dad, would pick up extra shifts for overtime pay. When I was in middle school, I remember my parents talking about their credit card debt and how they had maxed out on multiple credit cards. I seen them struggling to pay them all back and from then on knew that if I wanted to live a little more stress free than my parents, I would have to budget better.

My parents come from ranchos where they raised animals, vegetables, and fruit to eat. They later came to the Unites States and worked in the fields for years. They picked grapes, oranges, lemons, and other fruits in the valley. Their knowledge helped them learn how to grow trees and now we have different types of fruit trees in our house. My mom also loves gardening so our yard is all green full of flowers and trees. I helped them dig holes and plant the seeds when I was younger. Having food in my own garden is helpful because whenever I need something it is always there for example the chiles, lemons, melons, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and more.

My grandma would make me “hierbabuena” or mint tea for cramps or stomach aches. If i had a cold or cough, my mom would rub Vicks vapor rub all over my back, chest, and bottom of my heels. My grandma would say that the cold comes in through our feet thats why I would have or keep my socks on at night. Instead of going to a chiropractor when we had body pain, we rely on a “sobandero” or a traditional healer.

Growing up, I have been surrounded with alot of kids because my grandma used to be a babysitter maybe around 7 years ago. She used to take care maybe about 15 to 20 kids from the ages 6 months to about 15 year olds. I would enjoy seeing my house full of kids because we would all get to play with each other. My grandma was so extra that she would tell the parents to not bring food because she loved cooking and everyone loved her food! Keeping in mind that back then babysitting was so cheap compared to now, so my grandma basically provided everything for them.

Religion

I'm not sure if everyone does this but after a person passes away, my family does a prayer week in which we pray the rosary. We get together the day after the person is buried in hopes to help them crossover into heaven. I grew up praying the rosary so I was shocked when I realized this wasn't what everyone does.

Growing up my house was always full of kids. My mom was a babysitter so I was always arounds kids, of all ages, babies, toddlers, even teenagers at some point. It was fun for me as I always had someone to play with. Once I got older I took on the job myself and started babysitting on the weekends or after school. I think this served as the foundation for my love for kids and childcare.

Cooking/ Childcare

It's challenging to be the first child and a female in a Hispanic family when you grow up with traditional parents who think that women are only meant to be housewives. I was soon tasked with a wide range of household duties, including childcare and cooking. All of the expertise that my mother could impart to me was that of cooking recipes and household maintenance. To be fully prepared for independence, you must push boundaries to learn other life essentials, such as how to change a car tire.

Cooking and Baking

In many Mexican households, it is 'tradition' that women are the ones who always have to cook. Personally, I never really liked this ideology and neither does my mother even though she doesn't really go against it, it that makes sense. But knowing this, made me want, because of my decision to learn to cook and bake. My mom is the one in my family who always gets complimented for her cooking and baking, which I personally agree, even though some might say I'm biased. So, I started just being around the kitchen while she cooked and while we talked I payed attention to the way she did things and these memories are some of my favorites with my mom actually. Now when I'm cooking or baking, I find that the strategies I learned from her and some, I made on my own are now funds of knowledge I hold.

Repair: House Maintenance

Growing up if there was ever something broken around the house my dad would always be the one to fix it on his own, even if he didn’t know how to. His reasoning was always it’s a waste of money for someone to come and fix it when he can do it. As long as he thought with common sense it would turn out fine. This goes for anything related to cars, appliances, and his house.

Household Management: Cooking

While my dad focused on the fixing aspects of the house my mom focused on the cooking. She would cook for us everyday and has been something she volunteers to do when a family member invites her to a party. Immediately offering to bring something or helping with a dish. Both my parents focused on two different aspects but involved both myself and sister to do both because they don’t want us to rely on others for simple tasks like cooking and repairs.

In my household it is a tradition to always make a birthday cake for someone's birthday! We never buy store bought cakes. This was to show how much we truly care about their birthday. I guess its about the effort. I learned how to bake from my mom because of this and became really good at making cakes. This was also my bonding time with my mom and since I no longer live at home I miss the special cakes she would make me but I love seeing the ones she makes now for my younger sisters.

Folk Medicine:

My mom always had some sort of herbs for any sickness to relieve any pain we might have. After some time, I pick up what herbs would be good for a stomach ache or a headache. My mom learned about folk medicine from her mom. If you ever need good remedies, I can ask my mom. I hope to learn more remedies and at times I can do it all by myself.

Religion:

Religion is an important part of my family's morals. We always go to Church on Sunday morning. Church consists of singing songs, reviewing the bible, and a pamphlet with bible scriptures. Every year, they host an assembly that keeps our religious aspect strong. I can answer some biblical questions you might have, which are qualities I was taught by my parents. Every day, we have daily scriptures that strengthen my spiritual side. My mom strongly recommends we keep our religious aspect strong. Thus, I wish to bring this aspect to my own family when I have one.
