EDUCATION AS WELFARE? (Question #1) [Sec.B] by Barry Goldenberg

In Michael Katz's article in DISSENT MAGAZINE, he argues that public education has been the largest source of welfare through U.S. history. It's provocative argument! QUESTION #1: Do you buy Katz’s argument that education should be considered welfare, and that schools have been more about welfare than actual education (i.e., social mobility)? Why or why not?

For those who don't have access to a vast amount of resources or great education, they may fall prey to giving into outsider opinions of them. Then we also have some schools who have a lot of resources, but with districts much more concerned about test scores and rankings than about truly preparing students to enter society.

-Angel Franco, Haofeng Shen, Yeseul Lim

The way the question is worded makes it seem as though this argument is made to present a false equivalency between school and welfare. We as students also have a different perspective of it considering attending and don't see it as a literal form of welfare. Welfare is a form of financial assistance, and those of lower-income don't receive much of it. An example would be a middle-class family sending their child to a lower-income school, where they would not perform well despite the financial standing the student has.

Group: Neil Chen, Jasmine Foo, Astou Niane, Nieves Prieto

To some extent we do agree that education is welfare. Katz explains how schools are used to deliver benefits that are much similar to that of welfare programs. However, this might not be the case for all schools. It does fits by securing specific social services for students but it can be seen as something that is an addition to providing an education for students rather than that being its main focus.

Tayla Crenshaw
Alexandria Dahcke
Chenxing Lu
Khine Thu

Schools are often a major provider of food for students which is especially important for those who come from lower income families who may not always have sufficient means to provide for their children.

Viridiana Hernandez, Paola Alejandra Becerra, Audrey Co, Mohammad Amirkhalili
