Online Shopping Increased by 50% Amid Coronavirus Fears, According to Quantum Metrics Study

A study carried out in March showed a 52% growth in revenue for e-commerce stores

Los Angeles, CA // 30th April 2020

According to an article published on the website, Footwear News, US stores that operate both brick-and-mortar stores and e-commerce stores have seen a 52% increase in online sales since the beginning of 2020.

This is thought to be as a result of the impending lockdown measure that has been put in place due to the Coronavirus outbreak worldwide. With more people being asked to stay home to prevent the speed of the virus, shoppers have been forced to choose digital channels to buy essential and non-essential products to help them survive in lockdown.

According to the study, there are three main reasons for the substantial shift to online shopping. The first is that stockpiling and panic buying made it impossible for shoppers to find the products they need and the quantities they were hoping to buy in physical stores.

The second reason for the increase in online shopping is that many brick-and-mortar stores have been lacking in regular stock of essential items due to missed shipments and delayed restocking from international vendors. This has meant that many shoppers were forced to purchase from online retailers or make advanced orders online for items that are currently out of stock.

The third and most impactful reason that there has been a significant rise in online spending is that people are actively trying to stay away from shops in order to reduce the amount of time they spend outdoors or in the company of people outside their household. When shoppers can, they have been opting for online grocery deliveries instead of braving the busy supermarkets to buy their essentials.

According to the study, e-commerce stores have also seen an increase in conversion rates for non-essential products too, meaning that 8.8% more website visitors actually made a purchase, compared to figures from the same time last year.

In addition to the increase in essential spending, shoppers that are currently working from home or out of work as a result of the virus have been purchasing products that make staying home more enjoyable.

Products such as home workout equipment, baking equipment, and smoking paraphernalia such as vapes and bubbler pipes are being purchased online in large quantities. Shoppers are now opting to buy from online headshops like DopeBoo instead of visiting physical stores in their local area.

According to the study, 'In-store shopping has always generated more consumer spending' which means there is still likely to be an overall drop in consumer spending as a result of the outbreak, however, the increase in online shopping is likely to give the economy a healthy boost as the pandemic continues.

Source: IV Media
