In the winter of 1888, Van Gogh travelled to Arles, France, in hopes of starting a community of artists there. As it took him a long time to convince his artist friends to join him there, he had a lot of free time, and stayed a lot of time alone indoors. After a while, he began to draw his surroundings, including his bedroom.
