Grady also says that instead of relying on "slavery and agriculture, unconscious that these could neither give nor maintain healthy growth," the New South will rest on business, democracy, and a diverse industry. Confederates, or people who were still fiercely Southern and opposed to rejoining the Union, would've been against his message because they likely valued agricultural life and slavery.
