Grady tries to appeal to people's emotions by talking about how a dead man will have nothing to take into the afterlife that was Southern made; he has "a New York coat and a Boston pair of shoes," pants from Chicago, and "a shirt from Cincinnati." He wants the South to be as strong industrially as the North and for people to have Southern pride. He also shows how the South has already improved from what the dead man had by talking about marble-cutting factories, wool mills, iron mines, and iron furnaces that are all in the South now. With that, he's trying to almost intimidate the North because he says "We are coming to meet you" and "We are going to take a noble revenge."

In this speech he's trying to sell the New South to the North by talking about freed slaves. He does mention that the South has "fallen in love with work" but he also mentions that black people in the South are some of the most prosperous and successful people in the South. He says that black people share the protections of the law, share school funds, and have friendship with all people. Grady also says that instead of relying on "slavery and agriculture, unconscious that these could neither give nor maintain healthy growth," the New South will rest on business, democracy, and a diverse industry. These were likely appealing to the North because they were more abolitionist than the South and already had established factories that were very successful.

Northerners and freed slaves would've probably liked Grady's speeches because they envisioned a South led by 1) industrialization and factory life, and 2) equal treatment of freed slaves compared to white people because of the industrial business image. Confederates, or people who were still fiercely Southern and opposed to rejoining the Union, would've been against his message because they likely valued agricultural life and slavery. They would've wanted to keep things like black codes and Jim Crow laws; these kept freed slaves in what was essentially another form of slavery while still keeping agriculture and farming as a business in the South.

However, to those in the South who couldn't care less about slavery, wanted to be on equal footing with the Northern cities, and freedmen, this speech would have been exactly what they wanted to hear, after being torn through by the Union army.
