He ascended the throne after defeating his brothers.

He inherited a vast empire from his father. He turned his attention towards Kalinga

Kalinga was a turning point in Ashoka's life. The Nandas had conquered Kalinga, but it became independent. Bindusara could not conquer Kalinga.
The conquest of Kalinga was very bloody. Thousands of soldiers and innocent people were killed.

The sight of the battlefield filled Ashoka with sorrow.

He decided to never wage a war and embraced Buddhism. He adopted the Policy of non violence.

He was filled with compassion and the need for right living He went on a pilgrimage to Bodh Gaya
