The Berlin Wall was a barrier that divided East and West Berlin from 1961 to 1989 during the Cold War. It was built by East Germany to stop people from fleeing to the democratic West. The wall separated families and symbolized the divide between communism and democracy. On November 9, 1989, growing protests and weakened communist control led to its fall, paving the way for German reunification in 1990. German people, including our German teachers, celebrate this day every year. Last year, even the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge was illuminated in the colors of the German flag to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Such attempts to fix the pain as they keep arriving include tougher laws on the guns themselves, help for those who would kill people, security in our schools, from active shooter drills to surveillance. And while these precautions have been instituted with the goal of protecting students, the issue still serves as a running sore on broader society's own struggle with violence and safety.
