Article Summary with Key Points

The article “Why Intellectual Freedom and Equitable Access Are Even More Important Today” emphasizes the critical role school librarians play in upholding intellectual freedom and ensuring equitable access to information for all students. This article reinforces the ethical and legal responsibilities of school librarians to uphold intellectual freedom as well as defend the librarian role to be the defender of democracy and diversity. It leans heavily into the ways that the first amendments is extended with regards to the right to receive information as well as outline critical court cases that dictate the ways in which minors fall into this category both where in some ways minors are included, yet varied in state laws when court cases gave school boards the power to restrict this right. The article goes right into the ALA Bill of Rights that in some ways directly opposes these laws where they define "origin" to include age, solidifying in these guidelines that minors are not excluded within the rights under the first amendment. A clear message is that librarian must be aware of both these guidelines related to intellectual freedom especially in a school setting while also being aware of the state laws that dictate certain decisions. The final piece to the article was pulling everything together in order to emphasized the importance of a balanced collection.
