At a Vose, a parent newsletter is sent out in Spanish with important dates, events and announcements. Some schools, such as Vose have bilingual members in the PTO, who are always looking to welcome new members.
There is also a community liaison, Nancy Ashton, who does a great job of connecting the Spanish speaking community to the school and to outside resources. I think it’s important for teachers to be aware of these kinds of resources as they can help ELL parents to be better informed and feel more connected and involved with the school. This is important to me because I am aware that if you rarely hear from or see a parent, it does not mean they don’t care. Perhaps no one has informed them of these resources before or perhaps there are other factors such as those listed above that are preventing them from connecting to the school.
