Think: Power and Surveillance by

For your essential preparation this week you need to think through a situation which may emerge in the not too distant future...

It is 9 am on a Monday and you are in your first lecture of the day. Your coffee is your lifeline as you hear the lecturer getting started. You are not feeling it today and the dry monotone filling the lecture hall instantly puts your brain to sleep. You open your browser and start randomly searching through ASOS and Etsy, another page has the fanfic you are working your way through - a Marvel alternate ending where Steve Rogers stays with his true love, Bucky Barnes. You chat to a mate on your phone: 'I'm dying today, this guy is the WoRsT...*sigh emoji*'. You open Instagram, scrolling through your feed, posting to your stories a sneaky selfie, captioned 'Is it Friday yet?'.

Suddenly your name is called and your head shoots up. The lecturer is looking right at you. And projected on the wall for the whole lecture theatre to see is your desktop view, a box on the side reveals your text messages, another shows your insta story. In the bottom corner is a live camera feed, taken from the small camera just overhead.

'Glad to see you are paying attention'.
Technology is changing rapidly, and it isn't just the state or corporations who are interested in the use of media tracking, search history monitoring and surveillance. University wifi restricts your access to particular sites, including illegal download hubs and pornography, but what could be next? CCTV footage is active all over campus, what about in the classroom? Already there is discussion of programs which can track eye movements on Zoom, establishing if you are engaged in the meeting or on a separate page, scrolling, searching and oblivious. Could this be the next step in determining 'student participation'?

Let’s say you’re a fun and engaging teacher. Your lessons are well thought out and have flow. Discussion based topics are fun and most people seem to be enjoying your class.

Sometimes the issue isn't whether or not the subject is boring, in all classes there's bound to be a few non participating students here and there. If the issue isn't one's schedule being interrupted then its lack of motivation for the end goal.

There's not much you can do when someone has a lack of motivation but encouragement. But if the issue is laziness then implementing harsh participance rules can maybe motivate one to participate.

I would be fine with it, i have nothing to hide on campus my laptop is used only for uni work. it would be good to make sure that everybody was focused and not being distracted by other social media websites or distracting activities such as playing games, watching YouTube videos. However it would make people feel anxious all the time because they would feel like even though they aren't doing anything wrong they might still be judged on the way they go about learning and completing their work.

I agree with blocking internet access, blocking sites, downloads, etc. However, I think it's completely wrong to be able to see what the student is doing on their device, if a emergency message comes up about a personal thing and someone else reads it when it was out of control of the student. I agree with, "well if you have nothing to hide" but it's not okay to then be able to see it without permission

Tracking at uni - Miray

Although i have nothing to hide on my personal devices at uni, i still would be highly uncomfortable with this level of access to my personal information. I also would not like the implication that my own freedom of action or thought is not in my own discretion. I think that education should be structured based on what would be helpful to the student and how determined they are to learn. Our humanity would also be overlooked given that even on our “off days” we still have to perform to the level that would be expected on a regular day.
