Reflection on the Milkshake Moment

After reading the white paper, I am most struck by the analogy of "...knitting success and education together..." (p.14) Indeed the process of formulating a successful education is very much like knitting with different colors to form an eye pleasing pattern. One needs to plan the pattern and the stitches. This is like defining what we think success and education would look like together and the best method to achieve that result. It takes thoughtful planning and skillful techniques in order for the result to be beautiful and harmonious.

When I first began to teach my students in the Bilingual Chinese Program, I realized there were a lot they needed to learn! Most importantly, they needed to learn English quickly in order to succeed in other academic areas.

My students not only needed me to teach them English but also guidance and support on how to acquire more English on their own.

Fortunately for my students, they have access to two great libraries in Philadelphia, one of them even has a Chinese speaking librarian! She provided them with additional support in finding what they needed and wanted.

I also utilized television, movies, free newspaper and computers to supplement their English learning needs.
