         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>1955 </strong>- Catholic nationalist Ngo Dinh Diem emerges as the leader of South Vietnam, with U.S. backing, while Ho Chi Minh leads the communist state to the north.<br><strong>May 1959</strong> - North Vietnam forces begin to build a supply route through Laos and Cambodia to south Vietnam in an effort to support guerrilla attacks against Diem’s government in the south. <br> <strong>July 1959 </strong>- The first U.S. soldiers are killed in South Vietnam when guerrillas raid their living quarters near Saigon.<br><strong>September 1960 </strong>- Ho Chi Minh, facing failing health, is replaced by Le Duan as head of North Vietnam’s ruling communist party.<br><strong>May 1961 </strong>- President John F. Kennedy sends helicopters and 400 Green Berets to South Vietnam and authorizes secret operations against the Viet Cong.<br><strong>January 1962</strong> - In Operation Ranch Hand, U.S. aircraft start spraying Agent Orange and other herbicides over rural areas of South Vietnam to kill vegetation that would offer cover and food for guerrilla forces.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Lasting for 20 years (1955-1975), the Vietnam war, as bloody as any other wars, took away more than 2 millions lives, in which many of them were civilians. 3 millions were wounded, and hundreds of thousands of children were left orphans. The war ruined both North and South Vietnam.</div>]]></description>

According to Indochina Newsletter, Asia Resource Center (Special Issue 93-97), the U.S. government spent around $350 billion to $900 billion on the Vietnam War including veteran benefits and interests, which left a heavy burden on its economy.</div>]]></description>

The U.S. and other countries join the war.<br><strong>October 20, 1950</strong> - U.S. troops push their way into Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.<br><strong>November 24, 1950</strong> - General MacArthur orders the United Nations forces to move to the Yalu River, the border between North Korea and northeast China. <br><strong>April 1951</strong> - President Truman believed that bombing china would end up to leading to a bigger war.<br><strong>July 27, 1953</strong> -&nbsp; North and South Korea sign an agreement to stop fighting.</div>]]></description>
