"The earth spun (...)" "June and the earth full of raw power
and everything everywhere in motion." The motif of the motion of the Earth supports the theme because it contrasts the vast scale of the planet with the fact that Douglas can be happy with so little things, like tennis shoes.

"Bang! I deliver your packages, (...) There they go!" - Douglas is very excited to do all kinds of things, even favors, as long as he gets the shoes of his dreams. This supports the message that things as little as tennis shoes, can make you very happy, and motivated.

"For last year's pair were dead inside. They had been fine when he started them out, last year. But by the end of summer, every year, you always found out, you always knew, you couldn't really jump over rivers and trees and houses in them, and they were dead. But this was a new year, and he felt that this time, with this new pair of shoes, he could do anything, anything at all." This long quote shows how Douglas was listing several activities he had done and wanted to do with his shoes, making his want more prominent. He really wants those shoes and want anything in his power to get them, at least before the summer ended. He felt with new shoes he would be able to do "anything, anything at all".

“Bang! I deliver your packages, pick up packages, bring you coffee, bum your trash, run to the post office, telegraph office, library! You’ll see twelve of me in and out, in and out, every minute. Feel those shoes, Mr. Sanderson, feel how fast they’d take me? All those springs inside? Feel all the running inside? Feel how they kind of grab hold and can’t let you alone and don’t like you just standing there? Feel how quick I’d be doing the things you’d rather not bother with? You stay in the nice cool store while I’m jumping all around town! But it’s not me really, it’s the shoes. They’re going like mad down alleys, cutting corners, and back! There they go!” (P.12 PDF) This quote shows that Douglas is very passionate and hyped to do the work for Mr. Sanderson.

"Whatever it was, it
was in the shoes, and it was summer." The symbol of the shoes being summer supports the theme of happiness because it shows how such an insignificant object as tennis shoes can encompass a whole season, and therefore, bring joy to the one wearing them.

“Yes,” said Father, “but what’s wrong with last year’s sneakers? Why can’t you dig them out of the closet?” (pdf 11, book 26) The contrast here is that Doug's Father reminds Doug about his last year shoes, and that those are good, but Doug has many good memories with them, but thus, it means that they feel old to him, not like his new shoes.
