Movie Summary

CODA (child of deaf adults) is a movie about a girl names Ruby who is the only person who can hear in her home. Both her parents and her older brother are deaf. She is their lifeline and is relied on for all communication outside of the home. The family's job is fishing in which they do not make a lot of money doing. One day at school, Ruby signs up for the school choir because she sees that a cute boy signed up. Although not seen in the show, nor her family knows, she loves to sing and has a passion for it. She is an incredible singer even though none of her family can hear it. Her choir teacher at school believed in her ability and encouraged her to apply for a prestigious music school scholarship. He have her opportunities at school and even a duet with the cute boy that signed up. After much back and forth with having to leave her family, the family supported her in her decision to audition. They show up to the audition and while she is singing she begins signing so that her family can be apart of what is going on. At the end, she gets the scholarship and moves off to college and the family is happy for her.

Who is Ruby Rossi?

Ruby Rossi is seen as both a hero and a victim in the movie. She is seen as a hero as she is what is keeping her family alive and part of society, but a victim because she has to always be available to her family and not be able to do things that she desires.

Ruby has many stereotypes placed on her and is made fun of a lot at school because of her family. This makes her very upset because people talk about her family negatively and she has to hear all of it and take on the burden for her family because they do not hear any of it.

Portrayal in the Home

In the Rossi household, Ruby is their crutch and they expect her to be at the becking call at all times. She is seen as a disappointment and as if she was letting down the family if she was not doing everything, everywhere, all the time for them. This portrays her sometimes as that is the only thing she is capable of doing.

Ruby is not accepted by her community, in fact she is made fun of by them. Not only is it because her family is deaf, but also because of their financial situation. Other students at school make jokes and give her weird looks because she sleeps in class because she spends most her time on the boat at 3:00am in the morning to help provide for her family.

Portrayal in Her Community

Since Ruby has to speak for her family, she is in many situations that do not directly involve her in their community. One main example is with fishing. When her dad and older brother go to meetings to get fair rights and pay for fishing, she has to talk for them because they do not understand. When her parents go to the Dr., she has to interpret all their medical problems for them. When her parents attend her choir concert, they cannot hear anything or do not know when to clap which makes them stand out pretty drastically. In most of these situations she and her family are looked down upon or lesser than.

Support in Ruby's Life

Honestly, there are not many supports in Ruby's life. The one main support I would say is her choir teacher which poured into her in group and individual settings. This was helpful to have one teacher who really cared for her and believed in her and her abilities despite her situation.

Missed Opportunities for Ruby

There were many missed opportunities for Ruby:

Home Support- Despite her choir teacher, the other teachers did not have empathy or consideration for her situation. In fact, one of the teachers even made a joke about it.

College Support- There was no specific college counseling or anything to help her move on post graduation. It seemed as though they did not think she was capable so they never gave her the chance.

Counseling- Ruby did not have a safe and wise outlet to go to when she was struggling with the burdens of school and home life. A counselor who could have stepped in and help her walk through those emotions would have been very helpful.

Reduced Work or Accommodations- Ruby did not have help for her situation in which she might not succeed at school because of her home life, and she was not given help she was just looked down upon for not being "good at school."

Ruby had a few people in her life that were very supportive of her, her goals, and her family. First, one of her best friends named Gertie was very understanding and supported her dreams and her family. Second, the guy that she was doing a duet with in choir was very intrigued and enjoyed her family, and in fact jealous because although his family could hear, they were not as close with each other as the Rossis.
