Week 15: What new products have you purchased in the last two years that were priced using either a penetration or a skimming approach? How did the pricing strategy impact your overall satisfaction with the product? Do you think the initial price was justified by the product's features and performance? Why or why not? by Jonathan Gordon

In the last two years, I have purchased products that used both penetration and skimming approaches. For example, I subscribed to a streaming service that offered a discount introductory rate to pull in new customers. This is a very common penetration approach. The cheap price made it easy to start, and since they had a lot of shows I like, I remained a customer even after the price went up. On the other hand, I bought a new iPhone at launch, which was priced at a premium. This is pretty typical for products using a skimming strategy. While the higher cost set higher expectations, the product’s quality and performance justified the price. In both cases, the pricing strategies influenced me to buy the products, and then also met my expectations which made me want to continue the payment or buy more from them.

One new product that I purchased in the last two years was the iPhone 16, which used a skimming pricing strategy. Apple typically sets a high price point at any of their products launch dates to target early adopters who are willing to pay more for acclaimed new features and technology. This type of pricing strategy influenced my overall satisfaction in a negative way because I do not have high praise for these features. To me, a phone should have extremely noticeable features for me to consider upgrading to the latest models, hence, I don't this phone's features can nearly justify its asking price, considering a comparison to an older model, which does not have much of a change in its functionality, at a much more reasonable price.

One new product i purchased, was a MacBook. This is a skimming approach. It started at a very high price. This isn't crazy for Apple to do. They always price there technology very high. It gets the attention of people because there's always something new about the tech, when something comes out. To me I was plenty satisfied with the product, The high price almost guarantee's a reliable product. Overall, I was very satisfied. The phones performance was great. The price made sense for how well it preformed.

I bought a pair of wireless headphones in the last two years that were very expensive at first, using a skimming pricing strategy. The high price made me think they would be really good, and the sound and noise cancelling were strong. Still, I felt the cost was a bit too high compared to other headphones. Over time, the price dropped, and I saw similar ones for less money. I was mostly happy with the product, but I think it was too expensive at the start.

In the last two years, a major purchase I made was an Xbox Series X, coming in at just under $500 dollars at the time. the approach the sellers were using was the penetration approach, as the product is now sold at up to $700. At the time, I believed $500 to be a lot, so the price with my purchase made me have high expectations for the time. Since then though, I do believe I got what I had paid for and more. Although I was slightly skeptical as first admittedly. the price was certainly justified at the time in retrospect, especially compared to its predecessor which saw problems in related product models. I personally failed to have any performance nor complaints about the features but only praise. Since the purchase I have had many good memories whilst using it and would say I certainly got my moneys worth, especially now knowing what the product cost today

Mond- I bought Airpods pros using a skimming price strategy, paying a premium for features like noise cancellation and superior sound quality. The high price initially felt steep, but the product's performance lived up to expectations. I was satisfied because the sound and noise cancellation justified the cost. Though other brands offered similar products for less, the AirPods Pro's quality made the higher price feel worth it in the end.

My parents just purchased a new iPhone and a new Apple Watch for my birthday that were using the skimming approach. The pricing strategy had many different effects on me. One, knowing the price of my phone/watch makes me take better care of it and be more careful. Two, keeping in mind that I have the latest model of a technology does not make me feel 'cool' or 'superior' but it makes me feel loved and cared for, knowing that if purchasing technology for me, they want me to have the latest updates. Three, whenever my parents purchase any electronics, they don't see a reason to purchase something from an older model, so they purchase the latest deal. And lastly, I believe the pricing was worth it. On my old phone I had a very little amount of storage, so any time I would need to update it, I would go to my camera roll and delete many photos and videos with memories, now I have a lot more storage than I need and I will not be faced with such issue. I believe the price is justified, especially if you purchase such products when you need them, not get the yearly update.

One product I bought that used a penetration pricing strategy was Spotify Premium for Students. When I signed up, they offered it for just $4.99 per month, and it came bundled with Hulu and Showtime at the time. That incredibly low price was clearly designed to capture students early and foster long-term brand loyalty. I bought the Meta Ray-Ban Smart Glasses which followed a price skimming strategy. They dropped at a premium price, targeting tech enthusiasts. I bought them to try something new. They then put the glasses on sale
