Jenna Eszak- One quote that resonates with me and has left me speechless is "In a world that has suffered the ills of imperialism, colonization, and slavery imagine that we have all finally fought our way toward 'access' to the table, yet the substance of what is served is still steeped in the privilege of whiteness" (Lyiscott, 23) This quote resonated with me because I remember sitting in my history class where we would learn about imperialism, colonization, and slavery and how the world has changed so drastically from the horrific past. I believe this quotes digs deep in addressing the real issues that are happening in our world and that racism is still a major issue. As a society, we should never forget the past and the horrific things white people did to those of color. As a community we need to still work on the past and make sure it is changed in our world today and to stand up for the things we strongly believe in. The preface before this quotes discusses how there is no hierarchy anymore, we faced that time in history and thankfully it will never happened again but, there are still aspects that occur today. Our media is so saturated with with white middle class values and is shown to people of all races, ethnicity, etc. I strongly agree that our world needs to be equal where everyone is fed the same food but, the issue of white privilege needs to be taken accountability for as well. I chose this quote to challenge myself, I want to live everyday grateful for my life and understand that there is such a thing as white privilege. Some days I don't appreciate the little things and I need to change that. In school I was shown the movie "The hate U give" and it has been one of the most influential movies I have ever watched. It taught me to be grateful when it comes to police stops and treatment in general. "The hate u give" opens everyones eyes to the racial inequality that still occurs to this day. It provides us with a social analysis of racism and hate in this world and makes you recognize yourself and others in a full complexity. I believe that everyone deserves the same food, same treatment, and live together as a community, nobody is better than anyone else. "The hate u give" leaves everyone questioning the society we live in and I strongly believe this quote does as well.

Madison Pawarski: A quote that resonates with is is the quote "My perception of the world would find its grooves most saliently along the contours of my body type, my racial identity, and my gender." I chose this quote because even today so many people are judged based on their appearance. It is crazy to think that, that's how the world works. I've always loved the quote "don't judge a book by its cover". A lot of people seem to say this quote over and over again but a lot of people also still judge the book by its cover. Along with assuming someone by their appearance racism it still a HUGE thing today. We all need to do a part so things like this can come to an end, things can really change if we put in time and effort but nobody wants to do that. As we grow older it is a crucial thing that we need to work on especially if we want the present and future generations to accept others.

Jessica Andol: One quote that resonates with me is "After you can think of this struggle very clearly, close your eyes, and visualize yourself on the other side of that struggle." I chose this quote because it tells you to always keep a positive mind set. Also, it tells you that if you're struggling right now, not to give up because there will always be an end to that struggle. Especially right now with covid everyone is getting tested with this big struggle. However, if we all just do our part and visualize us on the other side, we can hopefully make it stop. I love this quote because on my bad days I always try and get through it as best as I can, and then I think to myself tomorrow is a new day/new start. In response to Jenna Zamrok: A quote that resonated with me was "Many of us leave homes where the most toxic, unbalanced relationships fester as they intersect with our personal mental health issues, childhood trauma, triggers, and systematic oppression and then enter into our classrooms confused about why we cannot find balance in any aspect of our work". I love this quote and I loved how it resonates with Jenna. To me this quote means the same thing. That no one should judge people because no one nows what's going on in their life and how hard their life could be.

This quote resonated with me because no one truly knows what's going on behind closed doors. Everyone's life is different and we shouldn't be judging the way people go about their lives. The quote "don't judge a book by its cover" goes perfectly with this. Everyone handles things differently and we should respect that.

PJ Harrington- One quote that resonated with me was from Chapter 1 "My perception of the world would find its grooves most saliently along the contours or my body type, my racial identity and my gender. Most black parents of young girls in America are forced to have the 'you're-Black-and-woman-and-you-have-two-strikes-against-you' talk." Stereotypes rule over the society, we let them control our opinions, our minds, our actions. The size of your clothes, the color of your eyes, the length of your hair, the color of your skin should not be the defining factor of who you are to society. Why are we still judging everyone that just walks by, when we know absolutely nothing about them. We form our opinions on people within a matter of a second. These “defining” characteristics will also put targets on the backs of certain people. Black parents shouldn’t have to have talks with their young child about the reality of today’s society. It is a completely unfair system, that only the people can terminate. Put your egotistical opinions away and get to know the person beyond that.

Gracie Cognion- A quote that resonated with me was "My definition of oppression is being trapped in someone else's narrative with no power or authorship" (Lyiscott 19). This quote resonates with me because there is no reason for someone to be trapped in someone else's narrative. The idea of being powerless against one's self, in my opinion, is one of the most terrifying situations to be in. White privilege has allowed me to not feel this way in society but it angers me that some people are automatically subjected to this behavior. Instead, parents and teachers need to teach at such a young age that just because somebody looks different that you, does not mean they are any less capable and deserve the oppression they are subjected to.

Grace Czyz- One quote that resonated with me was from Chapter One; "I refuse to be the face of color on the brochure of this school while I experience unaddressed racism here every single day!" I chose this quote because I believe it is very relevant in today's society. Recently racism has been a very talked about topic and rightfully so! There needs to be change in this world, race should not be a defining factor of rights, beauty, or worth. Everyone is equal no matter their skin color. I believe that this quote is a great way for white people, like myself, to see how black people, and people of different nationalities are used to show diversity in things like magazines and brochures. It makes me so disappointed in the world, that people continue to be treated differently just because of the color of their skin. We are all the same on the inside.

Lucia Dominguez- “After you can think of this struggle very clearly, close your eyes, and visualize yourself on the other side of that struggle.” This quote from chapter one resonates with me because I think anything can be overcome no matter who you are. I believe no matter what struggle you are facing there will always be a solution. I chose this quote because sometimes I think we as individuals dwell on the past and don’t look enough into the future. I think it is good to start visualizing yourself beyond your problems and know that no matter what it is it’s always good to have hope. I also like this quote because it does not only tell you to “visualize yourself on the other side of that struggle” but before you do that “think of this struggle very clearly”. I think it is beneficial to think about why you are having this struggle so this way you are able to overcome it and have less of a chance of facing it again. This quote resonates with me because I believe there is always a light and the end of the tunnel.

I think it is so sad that we as individuals in society are almost kind of trained to judge someone within the matter of seconds like you said. I believe no matter what race, color, religion, sex, or hair color you have you should only be judged on your character. I love how you added, "the 'you're-Black-and-women-and-you-have-two-strikes-against-you' talk" because it is so true that people think like this. It just disgusts me that people can actually think like this and put others down. I thought you did a great job describing this quote and how it resonates with you!!

I liked this quote because I think people try to put things into two options when it doesn't have to be. We are so complex as human beings that there is never just one answer to something. I believe that we need to remember that there is more than one answer and that being different or having another opinion is okay. The mindset of being black-and-white will only close off the opportunities that come before us. By staying open-minded we can discover new ideas and cultures that we were previously unaware of.

It's inserting to think about how people that come from a diverse background may be used to try and promote diversity in magazines and brochures. Its almost like there trying to cover their wrongdoings by "promoting" diversity. I think once we can learn to treat everyone equally then we won't need a face to cover things up. However, the table is always overladen with a European feast.” Page 23. I liked this quote because it reminds me of my privilege. Everyone at the “table” should have an equal say but they do not. This is important to remember as educators that even though every opinion may not be heard, we need to advocate for them. As much as I know that it shouldn’t exist, I think we can use our privilege to help those who cannot have their voices heard. We can help make change in peoples lives and make a stand.

Response to PJ Harrington- I love how you explained your reasoning for the quote you chose. I chose this quote because growing up I lived in a town that was predominantly white. Living in this town meant that I really didn't know what it was like with having a diverse group of people. That is one reason why I chose to come to Buffalo State. As the quote put it I didn't know I had white privilege, because I lived in a town that was all white. I only knew what we were told in school in history class. Until I saw the news about everything that was happening. It made me really think about things. About how much I have missed, not just because of the town that I was in but also what they weren't showing us in classes. In the future I hope this is one of the things that we can change for the better.

I chose this quote because through out my life I always thought that I had to do whatever everyone else did to fit in. I would wear the same cloths, buy shoes and maybe get a different hairstyle just so I could fit in with everyone else. But I finally realized that I didn't need to be like everyone else I should be able to what I want wear what I want and look however I wanted. It was truly a struggle for me back in elementary and middle school to find the right group to fit in with because I was just following whatever one else did. But throughout high school I found clarity and a good friend group that showed me that I can be myself with having to worry about the standards of other people.

One quote that resonates with me is "And because I am known for taking a stand on campus, I've become the target of open racist comments yet the school does nothing about it.". I chose this quote because I feel like a lot of people would 100% speak up about racism and stand up for what they believe in but they are scared of the many other people who would attack and make them a target just for doing what is right. Some are not scared of standing up for what's right and I commend them for it, when I see these kind of people it inspires me to do the same and not be afraid to speak up. But others would not do it even if they wanted to. I used to be afraid of standing up for others when they were the main target because I was scared I would be targeted as well, I was scared I would be made fun of. Now that I think of it, that was so silly because who cares what others think when you know that they are in the wrong and speaking up against them would have made such a huge change. I believe that you should not be afraid or hesitant of what others will do to you just because you want to speak up about the oppression and injustice that others feel and are going through. It will truly make a difference if you stand up for someone or a group of people, it shows that you are there for them and you support them, it will lead to change and most of all it shows these oppressed groups of people are finally heard. Take a stand for what is right, even the little things you do will leave a big impact.

At some point you have to surrender to the kinds of privilege you hold because everyone has something someone else doesn't." Pages. 28&29 This quote sticks out to me because the amount of freedom straight white people have can be infuriating to a queer or lesbian black woman. When people say "privilege" doesn't exist, its frustrating because they're usually too oblivious to it or don't recognize it because they lived in it their whole life.

In this case minorities are being oppressed and are being controlled by others. They are not able to speak up for themselves. This kind of hits home.
One quote that resonates with me is "....occur in relation to whiteness as desirable and Blackness as problematic. Across communities of color in America, for Example, internal stratifications of beauty position lighter skin, softer/straight.....whereas darker skin, coarser hair.... are viewed as less beautiful"(p.24). This really stuck to me because we continue to face this reality in our everyday lives. As a dark skin girl I was once told that I'm pretty for a dark skin, the worst part about it is that I was told this by a dark skin girl as well. This just upsets me because as we grow up we are brainwashed and told that being light skinned, with straight hair and a skinny body is prettier (society beauty standards), which is just messed up because we are all different and beautiful in our own ways.

"in a world that has suffered the ills of imperialism, colonization, and slavery... imagine that we have all finally fought our way toward 'access' to the table, yet the substance of what bis served is still steeped in the privilege of whiteness." coming from a very diverse school I have not seen white privilege like kids from other schools have seen. When Im with kids from other schools (wealthier) they seem to look at people that are not white different then I do. and I think a big role in that is the white privlige they get at going to a predominantly white school. Some of these kids have had only white kids in there classes since kindergarten. while I have had less then 50% white kids in my classes. and that is the problem in America. if our civil rights movement to end segregation was in the 60s... then why are some places in America still segregated???? us as Americans have to start looking at each other in new ways and start looking at us all the same. we need to spot white privlige and stop it. because as long as privilege is still around... so is segregation, racisim and every other civil problem we have in America

Our societal standards today want you to be white and skinny thus showing the amount of white privilege one can have. With no representation of black people in the media, entertainment, or anywhere it becomes hard to love themselves for who they are as society sees you as less when in reality it is internalized racism that should be acknowledged and stopped. Every person should be included and respected no matter what they look like.

in response to Cassandra Hurd- I agree with what you were saying with treating each student fairly. I think that not enugh teachers are too welcoming to students of all races, genders, ethnicity's, and LGBTQ+ friendly. I'm not scared that they aren't welcoming to everyone but they need to show it. and I think what you said is what has to happen in class to make students want to feel safe at school.

One quote that resonates with me is "We must look this fundamental racial binary in the face in order to illuminate the massive social construct that we silently exist within-". This personally resonates with me because as a young black female, I've always been told to fit the standard. Although it is not a written expectation, it is expected to be shown by people of color, if it is not demonstrated it can result in a disadvantage in opportunities.

One quote that resonates with me is "white privilege has so long shrouded us in the lie of its glory that we fail to see one of its most obvious limitations". This resonates with me because as an urban student in a very diverse school district you can just see from the outside how under prepared and limited we are compared to the predominantly white schools that are provided with everything they need to succeed.

One quote that resonates to me is “ I refuse to be the face of color on the brochure of this school while I experience unaddressed racism here every single day!” Page 1 line 1. I feel like this quote sticks and stands out to me because black people go through this very often and for me to be a young girl growing up with many aspirations I already have to work 10 times harder to be recognized because I am black. The systems and school don’t care about the goals or dreams I have the only want the BIPOC there to make them look good when in reality they only have black people there so they don’t look racist but the whole time they are using black people you advertise purposes. They are trying to show how everything is equal but nothing has changed from the past we still get treated the same way so like the quote said why should she be the face of the poster when the racism is being unaddressed.

One quote that resonates to me is "The previously mentioned student will recall the trauma of racist high school experience." This quote resonates and stands out to me because I remember the beginning of my sophomore year in math class my math teacher said a racist comment when I was only asking him for a utensil. We had started a argument and his racist comment was "oh you think you so tuff, what are you a blood ,crip ,or in the Latin kings." I couldn't believe that just because I'm Hispanic he assumed I would be in a gang.
