I definitely agree with Ratiliff on the importance of repetition in music. He likened repetition to playing peekaboo with a child, "You're going to do it over and over again: that's the repetition, but you're going to do it differently each time." I interpret that to meant, that even though you could listen or play a song continuously on repeat and you would still experience it differently each time.

This is a song off of Ratliff's playlist. I think it really shows exemplifies what he was saying about repetition. In the book he talks about how a lot of musical artists make different parts to the same record. That sometimes it would be the same song but with small almost non existent change. This song has 4 parts to it and they don't really sound all that different.

Repetition whether it be in music or tv, is the reiteration of the same sound or phrase throughout the piece. On a physiological level repetition is said to be very good for our mental health. A lot of people find comfort and excitement in the repetition of their favorite song. Instead of feeling bored about knowing what’s about to happen next it only seems to deepen our involvement in our own musical experience. Repetition changes the way we listen to music. It makes it so that even though we may have listened to the same song ten times, we still think that it’s even better on the eleventh. It makes us participate in the song itself by making us imagine what that next note or lyric is going to be.
