Rex and Rose Mary believe that their parenting style will help their children overcome obstacles easier and faster. An example of this is when Jeannette was learning to swim. Rex says on page 66, “If you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim.” Rex throws Jeannette over and over in the water, till she learned how to swim. Though Jeannette was a bit upset after her swimming lessons, Rex reminds her that she did in fact learn how to swim.

How Non-Conformity Impacts Your Children

Jeannette was impacted by her parent's non-conformity living style. Rex and Rose Mary hardly put food on the table for their kids, which left them looking for food somewhere else. Jeannette says on page 288, “It’s really not that hard to put food on the table if you really wanted to”. Jeannette knows that her parents could have put food on the table instead of her stealing food or looking for it in the trash can.

How Lack of Structure in a Family Affects Children

Lack of structure in a family affects children’s overall wellbeing. A good structure helps kids feel supported and secure. In Jeannette’s memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette’s younger sister Maureen was severely affected from a lack of structure. Jeannette shares on page 289, “Mom kept insisting that all Maureen needed was fresh air and sunshine... Six months later, Maureen stabbed Mom.” Being the youngest child of the family, Maureen was able to experience the lack of structure in her household, resulting in her becoming mental. She stabs her mother because Rose Mary thought it was time for Maureen to move out of the house.

Children Need to be Self-Sufficient in a Broken Home

In the memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette shows how self-sufficient she is because her parents are so unreliable because it is up to her to keep the family together. One day, men from child welfare came to knock the Wall's door and Jeannette told them on page 208, “I don't think Mom and Dad would want me talking to you without them here, come back when they're here.” Alone, she manages to make the men leave, as well as convinces her mother to get a job in order to keep the family together.

How Setting Boundaries is Essential to Self-Care

Boundaries are important and are a form of self-care. In the memoir, The Glass Castle, Jeannette is seen setting boundaries for herself many times. For example, in page 204, "When I started going back to Grandpa and Uncle Stanley's apartment for a weekly bath, though when I was there, I made sure to give Uncle Stanley a wide berth." Uncle Stanley was acting very inappropriate towards Jeannette, but she also wanted to take a bath, so she avoided Stanley as best she could. Jeannette is looking out for her well-being and self-care by setting a personal boundary with Uncle Stanley.

People make mistakes in a variety of circumstances throughout their lives; by forgiving them, you release yourself from your rage, condemnation, and resentment. Toward the end of the memoir, Jeannette meets Rex for the last time and admits in page 279, “I could not imagine what my life would be like-without him in it. As awful as he could be, I always knew he loved me in a way no one else ever had.” Despite everything Rex put Jeannette and her siblings, he forgave him, resulting her to be more at peace and accepting of herself.
