A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS shows that most Americans view an immigration officer’s fatal shooting of Minneapolis resident Renee Good as an unjustified use of force. Nearly half also see theunified incident as evidence of deeper problems within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while fewer than one in three believe the agency’s actions have made cities safer.

Only 26% of respondents said the shooting was an appropriate use of force. A majority—56%—called it inappropriate, and 51% said it points to broader systemic issues with ICE. Just a small percentage viewed it as an isolated event, while others said they lacked enough information to form an opinion.

When asked about ICE’s broader impact, Americans said by a margin of 51% to 31% that its enforcement operations make cities less safe; another 18% said they see little effect either way.

The release of videos showing ICE agent Jonathan Ross shooting Good has triggeredstrongly divergent reactions from Democratic and Republican leaders. That partisan divide is reflected in public opinion, though Democrats appear more in their criticism of ICE than Republicans are in their defense of the agency.
