"Teaching to who students are requires a recognition of their realities" (Emdin, 2016)

The first step to being able to teach children from all different backgrounds is to realize that their real life outside of school may not be identical to ours. As a teacher, one should consider this factor when judging how a child is performing in the classroom. Students are just like us. They have multiple factors that collectively make them who they are just like those factors make us. To be able to fully allow the child to grow and love learning, the teacher needs to know the child first. What does the child like? How does the child learn? How does the child connect with the world? What experiences are they bringing to the table? Let the children speak too. The teacher can learn stuff from the children as well. Teaching is a partnership. The reality is that all students are different.

Teachers should be the opposite from robots. They should be inventors, creators, and world changers. If everything a teacher is doing is predictable and can be copied by a robot, then the life of learning is vanished. Expression and feelings are something that robots can not display. How can a child grow to love learning if the teacher does not even portray that? Maintaining structure and the unfairness of a school will only birth more problems, not solve them. If we want students to love learning and be problem solvers, we first have to be the example.

They have their own talents and strengths. Treating them all alike could destroy their individuality and make them all walk out of the classroom with the same haircut. Creating every one the students the same dehumanizes the individual by telling them they need to be like everyone else. Learn how to foster different haircuts and know the specific tools needed to keep trimming up the haircut. Make it look nice and make the person feel confident.

Creating a classroom that grows to become a family can be one of the greatest assets to a student. The student can trust the learning space they are a part of and feel like their learning is invited and welcomed. Having a family feel to the classroom can break down barriers that the students puts up that could hinder their learning and growth. A family grows together and so should a classroom.

If we teach our students to never further think for themselves and we feed them answers, how will they be problem solvers? They won't. They will be robots who only can answer question when the answer is a bubble that needs to filled in. Sometimes the answer has to be created, it is not just there. By creating a question that sparks the students interests, the lesson begins on an inviting note. The students need to feel like the lesson is relevant to them and teachers do this by making their lessons culturally relevant and responsive. The students will only pay attention for a certain amount of time. So in short, keep the lesson short and intriguing to captivate the students that are disengaged. Make the classroom important by giving it a new name and a positive reinforcement handshake.

According to the video for grades 5th-12th, YouTube is the number one search engine. We can not block our students from this. It is a part of their everyday life and we need to allow them to explore
technology that is used 93% of the time to hire new employees. As teachers, it is the job to create successful students and prepare them for the future. I mean that is the purpose of education, right? To create individuals who are independently intelligent and confident in what they can accomplish with their gifts and talents.

It highlights that the learning is more of a partnership rather than a dictatorship. It allows the teacher to have insight to how the students learn best and how the students interact to learn. The teacher should observe and take note of how this cogen occurs. Ask them questions that make them think in their way, not just the one answer way. To create a cogen classroom, the teacher needs to take a step back and the students take a step forward.

Make the classroom fun, an area where they love to come because they view learning as fun. Know the class and know what the students like and enjoy. This is where the cogen aspect can come into play.

Often teachers act like they are far above the students. The teachers act like they are the holder of all knowledge. The teachers design lesson plans for the students but forget what the teaching is all about. While creating lesson plans the teachers forget who they are teaching and how they will get the students to interact with the lesson. Teachers become so wrapped up in the idea of lessons and fulfilling standards that they completely dismiss perfect opportunities of combining context with the content being taught. As future teachers, we need to submerse ourselves in really getting to know our students and their backgrounds. By doing this a bond is formed. The bond that is formed will make the students see that you are really one of them also because you bring in aspects from their life and connect with them through learning. The teacher and student will start to learn together.

Often students do not raise their hands or offer a comment because they are intimidated to be wrong. A lot of expanded thinking is shut down in the classroom because the teacher is worried about staying on script. Question should be welcomed. The questions that stump the teacher should be praised. When questions are raised it is obvious the students are engaged in the learning. Stop shutting down thinking and start inviting it.

Your mindset is everything. Do students feel empowered in your classroom or do they feel shut down? High expectations make the student feel like you think they can do it. If a student feels like they can accomplish the task at hand then they will be more prone to try and try again. Shutting a student down can only damage the student, academically and physically.
