#1 - Mark Watney

An astronaut presumed dead on Mars, Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon in "The Martian", is the epitome of self-reliance, surviving while isolated on a planet besides ours. He is forced to grow his own food and ration the resources he already has at his disposal after his crew leaves him by mistake, and Mark is determined to achieve his goal of making it back home despite all the odds and variables against him. His natural will to live and hope for a crew to save him. His traits are best represented by the introduction to one of Ralph Waldo Emerson's excerpts about self-reliance, which he states, "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance... that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried."

From the song, Kurt Cobain sings - "Come as you are, as you were, as I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend, as and old enemy
Take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours, don't be late..."

From his excerpt, Emerson wrote, "The virtue most in most request is conformity... Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist... Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of our own mind."

These two quotes both speak about being your own person and separating yourself from what everyone else is doing around you, only using it as inspiration for your own path. Both passages reflect the idea of differentiating yourself from the rest of the crowd.

If one is mentioning his mental states, one could easily say that Vincent Van Gogh was a troubled man, but he has produced some of the most recognized and equally beautiful artworks the world has ever seen. Van Gogh wanted to follow his father's footsteps of working in ministry, but was unsuccessful, so he used painting as a way to redeem himself. His mental state was not in the greatest shape, as he suffered psychotic episodes and delusions; later in his life, he cut off a part of his own ear following a confrontation with old friend and avant-garde member Paul Gauguin, and he gave himself to an asylum. Throughout his sadly shortened life, he only sold a single painting, but his work has inspired millions of people and is currently valued in the millions.

Logos - "With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall."
This quote represents the problems with equilibrium or consistency in society, where everyone is playing the same part, and we lack the motivation to go out and seek something that is truly meaningful to us in our lives. Also, not being consistent leads to being misunderstood.
Pathos - "Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string."
This quote inspires the reader to listen to their heart and their own desires through imagery of a heart in order to achieve personal realization.
Ethos - "Misunderstood! It is a right fool's word. Is it so bad then to be misunderstood?" The tone of these short phrases suggests the writer Emerson is one of the misunderstood, and he suggests that it's not bad to be different than others, for we look to conform but at the same time stand out from our peers.
