Character Description

At the beginning of the novel, Bobby can be described as a typical teen. He lightly bickers with his parents, is bored of school, and participates in an extraciricular activity (jazz band). Then, he turns invisible, and everything changes. Bobby's new circunstance forces him to keep secrets and mind what he does, instilling a sense of maturity that continues to grow throughout the course of the story. When his parents are injured, Bobby begins to put his own desires second to the needs of his family. During Bobby's interactions with Alicia, he shows sensitivity and consideration for her feelings. Bobby is cautious on how he trests her with her disability, showing a sense of compassion he lacked before. By the end, Bobby is still a teen, making all the classic mistakes, but he seems to have matured significantly.

Effective Ending?

This is a book for teens, written about a teen. And the end is just as predictable. Bobby becomes visible again, his relationship with his family is better than ever, and he makes a new friend/potential love interest. I found that the ending suited the book well, a nice simple closing that tied up all of the loose ends. The ending didn't wow me, which contributed to the lowering of the rating. Regardless, I think the reader can take a simple sigh of relief after finishing and set the novel down with a feeling of satisfaction.

Being that this is a simple book, I chose to dig a bit deeper. I compared Bobby's invisibility to the feeling of depression. Bobby has to isolate himself and has to hide this secret from the outside world for fear of being different. He can't go to school or reach out to friends. Along this journey, builds a trusting relationship with his parents as they work out a way to make his problem 'disappear' (ha), and he makes a friend who understands his position. I think that's what makes this book lovely; you can relate it to your own invisibility.
