There is clearly disdain on the part of Gabriel, and there is a new power given to John: "He turned to face his father- he found himself smiling, but his father did not smile"(263 little book). In a sense, John has won a battle of wills with his father. He gains a sense of dignity, superiority in judgment and spirituality, and therefore power- he has succeeded in what Gabriel never can, true repentance and acceptance of sin. Although he does not know the exact story, John has implied before that Gabriel is not a truly good religious man: "No one, none of the saints in any case, had ever reproached or rebuked his father, or suggested that his life was anything less than spotless. Nevertheless, this man, God's minister, had struck John's mother. . ."(53 little book). John knows in his heart that Gabriel is not good, and with his new coming to God, he knows that although he himself is still a sinner, his repentance and willingness to repent and work make him good.
