This is the first psychosocial stage. This stage is experienced during the first year. During the trust versus mistrust stage, infants should develop trust that will last for a lifetime. They should gather that the world will be a good and pleasant place to live.

The second stage of Erikson's psychosocial development is autonomy versus shame and doubt, which is experienced in late infancy and toddlerhood (1 to 3 years old). Once children gain trust in their caregivers, they start to realize that behavior is their own choice. During this stage, children pick up on their sense of independence. Shame and doubt is likely to become developed if an infant is restrained too hard or punished too harshly.

Erikson's third stage occurs during early childhood, 3 to 5 years old (preschool years). In this stage children face new challenges as they enter a widening social world. If the child is irresponsible in their decisions and is made to feel too anxious, feelings of guilt may be seen.
