Hackers can obtain social insurance numbers, usernames and passwords for online services, credit card information such as numbers and expiry dates, along with passport numbers.

Some information we learned was to make sure all bills and financial documents are to be shredded before being recycled. When you move houses it is key to notify all the financial institutions of the change of address so they don't keep mailing financial information to your old house, and new owner. It is important to hide your pin from nearby viewers when punching it in to make purchases.

Some more information we learned was to be extremely careful with social networking. Its really important to always have the most restrictive security setttings available to you on the certain app or website. On an app like Facebook it is smart to turn off geotagging so nobody can see where you are relative to a certain location. Also, be smart about what you post onlne because it is extremely easy to find out where somebody lives by digging through your Facebook pictures and status posts.

In this video they talk about how when somebody steals your identity they can rent an apartment, get any size of a loan, and even get a job. They can file for tax returns and get your income tax funds right to there doorstep all under your name. With this being said as you can see it can be extremely hard to solve this problem and clear your name. It could take months for someone to even notice that they're identity is even being taken over which is the scary thing because a lot can be stolen in a couple months. There are a number of ways in which our information and identities can be stolen from right under our nose! Most of us just throw our old mail, old credit cards, and bank statements etc., however we should actually be shredding all the aforementioned documents so that no information is attainable by strangers. Also, some of us carry our wallets/purses that our full of various ID's. However, we should really just be carrying the bare minimum that we need and leave the rest in a secure place at home. Also, online banking and online purchases should never be done from a public Wi-Fi network. Identity thieves can instantly ruin your life. Once they get a hold of your identity they can commit crimes and leave you as the person being responsible. The identity thief can take out bank loans and get credit cards. As a result, they will binge shop and make major purchases all under your good name! The number of identity crimes is on the rise and the RCMP advises us all to take action now before it is too late.
