Mr. được sử dụng cho nam giới, bất kể đã kết hôn hay chưa. Mr. là từ viết tắt của Mister /ˈmɪstə(r)/ và được sử dụng từ thế kỷ 15, và Mister là dạng biến thể của từ “Master”. Nhiều người học Tiếng Anh thường sử dụng Mr. trước tên (first name), ví dụ như Mr.John hay Mr.Peter là không chính xác. Mr. luôn theo sau bởi họ (surname) hoặc tên đầy đủ (full name). Ví dụ:
