A disadvantage of University is that it can be costly, and only some have that money. However, you can get student loans to help you with this. I don't mind spending the money to attend university because it will give me more experience and help me understand theatre technology better.

For example, I could study theatre technology at the University of Derby. This would give me the skills to work in a professional theatre because Derby University works with Derby Theatre. 

Another example is I could go to the Liverpool School of Performing Arts (LIPA). By taking this course, I would gain all the skills I need to work in the industry. I would work with performing arts students to put on shows, and I would also be taught how to use all of the equipment practically.

If I were freelance, I would have to find work for myself. This would be a challenge because I would have to look for work myself, and many people would be hard to contact. They would already have their own network that they use, and I would have to try to get into their own network.

On the other hand, freelancing is good because you can choose who you work with/for. This would be good because you will slowly build up your own network, and after a while, you may get more gigs than when you started out.

For example, I could work for the Regent Theatre in Stoke on Trent. They offer jobs to people who want to work in technical theatre. You would start as a general technician helping with load-ins and load-outs, and then you can work up to a specialist area you want to work in. This would allow you not to go to university but still be able to work in the theatre industry.

• Some of the positives of this course are that I will be able to learn everything I need to enter the theatre.

• I could then specialise in 1 or 2 areas in my 2nd and 3rd year. 

• In my third year, I plan to take on a management role in one of the theatre industry's sectors. I would ether do lighting or sound if I could.

• In the Theatre Technology course, I could work in a professional receiving and producing theatre. 

• I can build my network and build contacts. 

• I will learn about everything that goes into a theatre production, as well as AI and VR productions.

• I started off making a sweeping synth sound. 

• The synth uses 2 square waves in the oscillators.

• I then added an EQ to the synth, boosting the low mids and mids to give it more of a tin sound. 

• I then added an automated EQ. This gives the effect of the sound moving. It goes from 20Hz - 20KHz 

• Then, I added distortion to the sound using a plug-in called Bit-Cruncher. This plug-in lowers the sound's bit rate to produce distortion.

• Something that went well was that I used different effects to make the sound more exciting and have more to it. 

• Another thing that went well was how I used automation in the sound. This adds more depth.

• To improve this, I could have used a synth with more oscillators to add more depth to the sound. 

• I could have experimented with the sub-oscillators to add those low frequencies and more rumble to the sound. 

• Put this into practice and record some FX

• I started off making a bell sound from the video. 

• I then added more drive onto the first oscillator.

• I added an EQ to the sound.

• It had a low cut to take out unwanted sounds 

• I boosted 2 of the fundamental frequency

• then, I added a large hall reverb

•  There are some things that I could have done better to make the bell sound more realistic. 

• I could have experimented with more effects to make the sound different. 

• Some think that the use of the synthesizer went well. 

• My choice of reverb was good because it made it seem like the bell was in a realistic space.

• This week, I took the little mermaid Traylor, took away the audio, and added my own audio to it. 

• First, I added the Little Mermaid overture to the clip to have a base song to work from. 

• Then, I decided to add some underwater effects to the sound to make it feel like you're immersed in the whole clip. 

• After that, I started to add more sounds to give it some more character 

• At one point in the clip, Arial kisses Sebastian, so I added a clip of a kissing sound to match what is happening on the screen. 

• At another point in the clip, Ursula comes onto the screen, so to make it feel more like Ursula, I add some thunder and lighting. 

• I added EQ on some of the tracks to make some of the elements of sound in the clips more realistic 

• On the underwater sounds, I rolled off the lights and boosted some of the mids 

• on the thunder, I took some of the highs off and some of the lows to box it in, then boosted the mids and low mids to give more of a rumble 

•  I took more of the highs off on the riser and boosted the lows to give it that cinematic rumble. 

• Some things that I think I could have done better at is maybe adding more effects and more cartoony effects to make it seem more magical

• I could have tried to add some of the vocal elements to make it more like the original trailer. 

• Some things that went well were that I matched the sound effects to moments in the clip. For example, when Arial kisses Sebastian, it is perfectly in time. 

• Something else that went well was cutting the overture. I had to cut this to match what was happening in the clip, so I had to cut it down so that it would fit. It wasn't a perfect cut, so I added the riser to help the transition into the other bit of the overture.

Review - 01/10/2024

• This week, I did Shrek the musical trailer. I removed the audio and added my own to it to practice adding sound effects and fitting sound effects to what is going on on the stage.

• First, I imported the Video to the logic

• after that, I found the Im a Believer soundtrack and added that into the video to give it some background music

• After that, I started to add some effects to each of the transitions between the different video clips

• For this, I used different cartoon sounds like boings and tin hits to give it the magical feel that Shrek wanted to create

• I added some bed-ruffing sounds when Shrek tries to pick up Fiona to make it more realistic

• I added a dragon roar to make the dragon come to life

• I added some weight-lifting sounds to over-emphasise when the prince is lifting the weights

• I added some EQ to the I'm a Believer track to take out some of the unwanted hissing and low bass that is hard to hear.

• I then added compression on both the bed sheets, ruffling, and the weight lifting sounds to bring them higher.

• I added EQ to the Dragon's Roar to remove the unwanted high-end sounds and enhance the bass sounds.

• After that, on the output bus, I EQ it and add a limiter to bring it up to the level that most videos or songs are at.

• Some things that went well were getting the audio lined up with the video. I think I have improved on that since last week.

• Another thing that went well was adding the EQ and limiter onto the output bus because I didn't do that last week, and I feel like that would have made last week better than this week.

• Some things that I think I could have done better are Adding more effects to the different changes and adding some different effects to try to achieve different sounds.

• Another thing that I think that I could have done better at is maybe trying to experiment with adding my own sound effects, maybe out of a synth or recording my own ones rather than just online. However, that is the way most of the theatre industry get most of there sound effects.

This project aimed to Understand the sound design and the different types of sound design. I looked at the Synthesis sound design and recorded sound design.

Some things that worked well in this project were that I tried using different synths during the synthesis part of this plan. I started off using the logic-based ES1 synthesiser. I think this worked well because I already knew how to use the synth from previous times. This worked for me because I already knew how to use its features. After that, I then went on to use the Sylenth1 synthesiser. This worked well because it was the same synth as in the video. This helped me because I could follow along with the video step by step and then change things to make them the way I wanted them.

When I recorded the sound design for the Little Mermaid video, it worked well because I already knew how I wanted it to sound. I found all of the sound effects and added EQ to them well. The Shrek Video was the best one out of all four. I added compression and used EQ.

One of my main weaknesses is still using a synthesiser. I believe this is because I have not used them as much as anything else. After all, I have not been interested in using them before. I could improve on this by finding some tutorials on YouTube, learning how to use synthesisers, and going into more detail about it.

Some of the skills that I have improved on are my sound design skills, especially when I did the videos. This is because I think I improved when I first did it to the last one. I believe that some of my technical skills have been enhanced because I have been using Logic Pro to do this, so my logic knowledge has grown.

While doing this project, I encountered some problems in the videos, such as aligning sounds to the timings. I could work on this more because if I run any sound effects, I must try to get them in time with everything else going on.

This will help me move forward by giving me another avenue rather than just doing sound engineering. I could then do sound design and sound engineering. This would give me different opportunities for things that could come up in the future.

To improve in these areas, I could spend more time on them. When I do this, I will be able to hone my skills even more. Another way I could improve my sound design skills is to find someone who does sound design and see if they can give me any advice or give me some work experience.
