1. The life of Elizabeth Ann Seton

Elizabeth Ann Seton was born on the 28th of August, 1774, in New York, America. She was born into a wealthy Episcopalian family, her father, Dr Richard Bayley being a doctor and one of the first health officials in New York. Her mother, Catherine Charlton Bayley died when she was only 3 years old. Her early life consisted of reading, everything from the bible to novels. Later on in her life, the Bible became her support and comfort as she grew older, continuing to love the Scriptures. At nineteen years old she married a wealthy businessman, William Magee Seton, on January the 25th, 1794. She had five children with him; this being a time full of happiness and joy. What she didn't know was that this would only be brief.

Within four years, the passing of William's father occurred, leaving the couple in charge of William's seven half brothers and sisters and the family's business. William's health started to deteriorate from here on, things only getting worse. They moved to Italy where William sadly died from tuberculosis. This, as well as her followed concern for the spiritual welfare of her family and friends, caused Elizabeth to fully devote herself to God and eternity, eventually leading her into the Catholic church. She captivated everyone by her kindness, patience and good sense, her desire to be a strong leader to the Catholic church only growing. She felt comfort in the idea that the Virgin Mary was her mother as she lost hers at a very young age.

She started a school in Baltimore and from there on, she and another two women who helped her in her work began plans for their Sisterhood. They established the first free Catholic school in America and on March the 25th, 1809, Elizabeth Seton pronounced her vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, binding for one year. From that time she was called Mother Seton. During this time, she caught tuberculosis but didn't let this stop her from achieving her dream. By 1818, the sisters had established two orphanages and another school. Today, six groups of sisters can trace their origins to Mother Seton's initial foundation. Mother Seton died on the 4th of January, 1821, at the age of 46, sixteen years after becoming a Catholic. She was beatified by Pope John XXIII on March the 17th, 1963 and was canonized on September the 14th, 1975, by Pope Paul VI.

At the time, the social structure consisted of the upper class, the middle class the working class and the poor. The was a massive difference between the people who were rich and the people who were poor; the poor had hardly any access to food or education whereas the rich bathed in the luxuries of having money. Poverty definitely motivated Elizabeth Ann Seton in her works as a reformer, to help those who had little to nothing.

“Live simply so that others may simply live”

This quote simply means thinking about how you live and what you live with or without. One of Elizabeth's values was simplicity and this lead her through her life, following the Gospel and God.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
“Be children of the Church.”

These words were spoken by Elizabeth to her sisters, whilst on her death bed. She wanted others to live out the Gospel and follow the footsteps of God, teaching others of what she taught. The sisters of her organisation doing just this.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Elizabeth Ann Seton's favourite prayer was the 23rd Psalm. This prayer showed her devotion and love for God and the Catholic church.

23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

2. The Good Samaritan

World Behind the Text:
The Jews hated Samaritans because they were half Jewish and half Gentile, them being known as 'half-breeds'. The Jews considered Samaritans to be low-caste because they didn't follow the Jewish laws. They violated the Jewish temple with pig's blood when the Jews tried to build a temple in Samaria. The Jews considered them unclean and took a longer route around their territory to avoid it. The hatred was mutual and intense, mainly because of the way the Jews treated them.

World of the Text:
A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and was attacked by robbers; stripped and beaten, leaving him half dead. A priest was going down that road and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. Then a Levite walked by and when he saw the man he also passed by on the other side. But when a Samaritan walked by and saw him he stopped and showed compassion; cleaning and bandaging his wounds and pouring oil and wine onto them. He then put him on his donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he paid the innkeeper and said, "Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back." Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbour to the man who fell among the robbers? He said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do likewise."

World In Front of the Text:
Even though Priests weren't allowed to touch unclean things and something like blood or a dead body was definitely unclean for them, there is an exception to this rule. Even so, the priest still chose to stay away from the man. The Levite also ignored the man with the fear of robbers and not wanting to get involved with a stranger. Of everyone, Jesus chose the Samaritan to be the one who was compassionate and helpful to this man. This parable shows that no matter who is in need, you should help them. That our purpose is to love and serve humanity and to be kind to our neighbour.

The Encyclical Rerum Novarum explores the Catholic Social Teachings. The Catholic Social Teachings cover all spheres of life; economic, political, personal and spiritual. Pope Paul VI founded and explored the principles of the Catholic Social Teachings that guide the work of many people today. These principles include; Preferential Option for the Poor (caring for the poor and helping the vulnerable), Dignity of the Human Person (treating people with dignity and respect), Care for our Common Home (taking care of the world we live in), Subsidiarity and Participation (people making decisions about issues that affect them), The Common Good (working together to improve the wellbeing of people in our society/world), Solidarity (mutual support within a group).

I believe the parts of the encyclical that inspired and informed Elizabeth Ann Seton and her work are; preferential option for the poor, dignity of the human person and solidarity. This is because, throughout her work, she cared for the poor and helped the vulnerable because this is the right thing to do and was what God would have done. She also believed that treating people with dignity and respect was very important as everyone is valid and is valuable. Mutual support and care for one another was important to her because it proves that everyone is equal and deserves their own rights.

6. Participation in the priestly, prophetic & kingly works of Jesus

Priestly Role:
There were many ways that Elizabeth demonstrated her participation in the priestly roles of Jesus. For example, she brought people together by captivating everyone by her kindness, patience, good sense and her desire to be a strong leader to the Catholic church. She made many sacrifices, being a widow with children and in need of financial support, she knew that becoming part of the Catholic Church would cause isolation from her family and friends. She was willing to die for the church and is known for the many sacrifices she made. Elizabeth spent many hours of her day visiting the church, praying and worshipping God. She also showed her devotion to God by going out and helping those in need.

Prophetic Role:
Elizabeth Ann Seton spoke out against many injustices by teaching people how to care and respect others. She did this by opening up schools and preaching about God. She spoke out against the disregard for the poor and vulnerable, she gave her pain back to God in service of him instead of letting it get to her, she forgave those who abandoned her and harnessed it in service of those less fortunate than herself. She used her life lessons to guide her through the rest of her life and accepted the pain that she suffered through the abandonment of her step-mother and the loss of her husband and two daughters.

Kingly Role:
Elizabeth Ann Seton's role helped others listen to her. She taught others to follow Christ regardless of the challenges we face, grief and suffering we experience and the abandonment by the ones we love. She still teaches us these things today and is a constant reminder to never give up on your dreams, to bear the pain of persecution, to love one another no matter what and to love and devote your life to God and give back to him for all that he's done.

Pope Francis carries out the priestly, prophetic and kingly roles of Jesus. He displays the priestly role by teaching others that the strength of a priest depends on his relationship with God. He is known for his preachings of God's mercy, concern for the poor and commitment to the works of God. He maintains that the Church should be more open and welcoming. Pope Francis holds masses and writes encyclicals that show his role as a priest. He believes that displaying the prophetic role of Jesus is to place others at the centre of the church and not itself. To put Jesus at its centre and the journey of him becoming man is what should be important, not only focusing on one person. Pope Francis displays the kingly role of Jesus by using his position as the Pope to talk about issues and possible solutions. He teaches everyone how we can help love one another no matter who they are.
