Hook:
“PTSD is a whole-body tragedy, an integral event of enormous proportions with massive repercussions,'' said Susan Pease Banitt.
Background Info:
Post-Traumatic Stress disorder is common in the veteran community. There are many experiences that could cause PTSD while in the service, or even after and not all of them are combat related. For instance, according to the Veterans Affairs health care, "55% of women who were in the military have experienced sexual harassment, and

23% reported sexual assault." Regardless of how it occurred, these traumatic experiences that lead to PTSD have impacted the lives of the veteran community. Many veterans feel PTSD can be the

catalyst to many things that go wrong in their lives.
Thesis:
PTSD has impacted the lives of the veterans by complicating the relationship with their families, increasing the thoughts of suicide, making it hard to keep working, and changing aspects of their personal identity; however, the Veterans Affairs health care is providing resources to help veterans live with their condition.

Hook: “Globally, women have fewer opportunities for economic participation than men…” stated the Peace Corps ("Global Issues: Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment").
Background Information: Females considerably share their work and creations helping corporations, from small to big, to grow and improve in the public eye. Although, behind the scenes, it isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. Women with authority in all settings experience positive and mostly negative direct and indirect comments and even when being addressed by someone, sarcastic and harmful actions are made in these encounters. Toxic masculinity takes a huge part in invalidating the effort and works of a woman. People make assumptions and try to manipulate situations. Discriminating behavior should not be tolerated.
Thesis: The effects of gender inequality can hinder the performance of women in leadership roles set in any establishment.

Hook: According to Stanford School of Medicine, 80% of people would choose to die at home, but only 20% are able to get their wish while 60% die in acute care hospitals and 20% die in nursing homes.
Background information: Palliative care is essential in known end of life situations. Palliative means to ease or soothe. The goal of palliative care is not to treat the medical condition because it is futile at this point; it causes more harm and pain. Too often, patients come in to the hospital and are terminal and receive aggressive treatment like feeding tubes and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In a hospital, CPR is only successful about 15% of the time (Palliative Care Network of Wisconsin). The goal of palliative care is to treat the symptoms and discomfort, which sometimes that means a patient will die comfortably, but sometimes it means they will live out their days at home in peace and comfort.
Thesis: With palliative care being so prudent, lack of education, lack of funding, attitudinal inherency, and structural inherency create many obstacles for it to be successful.

-Hanna Feinstein

Hook: Have you ever been so overwhelmed by everything going on around you that you could just close your eyes and scream?
Background Information: Sometimes it can be helpful to let it all out, but if you are a parent, you are more likely to have to force that frustration down and away, to not project it towards your child. Remaining calm while parenting is an important factor in raising emotionally stable kids. Yelling, blaming, irrational outbursts, and unrealistic expectations are all examples of what happens when a parent is not calm with their children. When these situations occur, they can cause a lot of tension in the family and lower children’s confidence. To be calm is to have internal composure that allows us to think and function at our highest potential. If a parent can work to the best of their abilities, then imagine the possibilities that could be presented to their children. If remaining calm while parenting was easy then everyone would do it, There are many techniques one can implement in their everyday life to help them achieve the goal of being a calm parent.
Thesis: Meditation, removing yourself, breathing techniques, and positive affirmations can all be great tools to remain calm while dealing with children, they may not all be easily attainable at the moment, but with practice, they can set you on the road to success.

Hook: Did you know that the United States has no officially recognized language? Yet, the use of the English language, whether spoken or written, is the universally accepted language of the United States.
Background Information: Americans fluent in conversing and writing in English have societal power and influence over those who do not have English fluency. American Sign Language (ASL), the third most used language in the United States, is recognized by the Deaf community as an essential component for the societal integration of deaf individuals in America, and wields the same power for the Deaf community that English does for mainstream culture. Most Deaf Americans consider themselves bilingual in ASL and English, with ASL being their first language. Even so, many colleges do not offer much more than an ASL club, such as the Handspeak Club at Southwestern College. Also, given that few deaf individuals are born to deaf parents or families, there must be non-deaf people who are able to support deaf individuals with access to full inclusion in mainstream American culture. It is commonly agreed upon that sign language is essential for deaf individuals for effective communication, and is the first language of most deaf individuals. Students wanting to study ASL should have the freedom to take courses in ASL to help bridge the divide between the hearing majority and the deaf minority.
Thesis: Even so, should ASL be allowed to satisfy the foreign language requirement at the secondary and post-secondary levels of education for non-deaf students, or are there not enough users of ASL to justify the resources needed for formal academic inclusion of ASL for the hearing student?

Camden Haraden

Hook: "We are asking nurses to do more with fewer resources. At the same time, nurses must be compassionate caregivers, technical experts, clinicians, and experts", states Cynthia King, PhD., MA, Director Client Organizational Development.
Background Information: Nurses are extremely important when it comes to the welfare of hospitalized patients. They are the eyes and ears of a physician. In 2019 the term burnout was added to the World Health Organizations International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Burnout is classified as a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Around the same time, this term was added about a third of nurses reported to be experiencing some sort of this new syndrome. And that is prior to battling a pandemic! There are many factors in a nurse's career that cause them to be stressed and without being properly helped can cause burnout and even mental breakdowns.
Thesis: Nurse burnout is the state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. While there are many reasons a nurse can experience burnout the highest reported have been lack of support, high-stress environment, and emotional strain from patient care. While there are many factors that contribute to burnout there are also many ways one can help prevent it. Learning of coping methods to help with stressors.
Stephanie Zavala

Hook: "Black LGBTQ identification with multiple marginalized identities makes them more susceptible to negative experiences and poor health outcomes", says Bowleg; Singh.
Background Information: Being black in the United States has it's own challenges and experiences, and is often coupled with poor outcomes. Being both LGBTQ and black is a common problem and issue that people refuse to talk about. What most people do not realize is that when you are apart of both communities you are a target for discrimination. Some people even struggle with mental health issues being part of both communities. Another thing is that having multiple identities may also allow black LGBTQ people to thrive despite their status in society.
Thesis: Identifying as black LGBTQ or having multiple identities affects many different things. You struggle with mental health, discrimination and equal rights. Learning different methods and educating others can help prevent a lot of these issues. This is how we educate one another and fix this issue one person at a time.

-Shante Clincy

The hard part is getting your mind into shape".- Anonymous
Background Information: The bigger picture of living a healthy lifestyle is is much more than the physical routine and diet. Inhabiting a healthy mind state with ones personal journey is one the biggest challenge in itself. Most people tend to find their biggest conflict when working towards a "better" version of oneself is to find happiness within themselves inside and out. The benefits go beyond physical change with exercise. We see children on their phone or table everywhere they go. From kids being on the stroller with their tablet at the mall to a family gathering event at their own house being on their phone. It is easier to hand out a tablet or a phone to a kid since we know they will get entertained instead of having the kid socially interact with others.
In what ways a meatless diet affects the body?

Hook:

In the words of the life-long vegetarian actor Pino Caruso, “People eat meat and think they will become strong as an ox, forgetting that the ox eats grass.”
Background Information:

This is a compelling quote because it reflects how people might have a wrong idea about meatless diets and how this affects the human body. A meatless diet is commonly defined by two major categories, vegetarian and vegan. The vegetarian diet does not include any animal meat such as red meat, poultry, and fish, but it may consist of animal products like eggs and cheese. The vegan diet is often viewed as the strictest form of vegetarianism because, in addition to the exclusion of animal meat, it does not include any animal-derived product or ingredients such as gelatin and honey. With the increasing popularity of meatless diets, the potential effects on the body are a matter of debate among dietitians and people in general. A meatless diet can be a matter of choice, health, or religion; In fact, in India, 38% of the total population is vegetarian and has one of the lowest rates of meat consumption globally (Benjamin Sawe).
Thesis:

As a result of the popularity of meatless diets in the past years, there has been a substantial number of clinical trials in humans that reflect positive effects on how this affects the body such as, reduce the risk of health conditions, minimize skin problems, a healthier heart and beauty benefits. Yet, some health professionals might claim that a meatless diet can result in nutrient deficiencies.
-Karina I.
