Drums! I have always thought that I have no sense of rhythm. Today I realized it might not be entirely true. I was able to learn seven different rhythms, even though that was extremely difficult for me. I struggled, I survived.
The history of the drums and the names of the different rhytmes were new to me.
I was out of my comfort zone, but that is where the learning truly happens. I am delighted.

What a day. Here was another Finn out of her comfort zone. I have all my life heard that I can't play or sing. But I survived the whole day. And even enjoyed a bit. It was eye-opening to do something this authentic and see the kids do the exact same.

Feeling the rhythm, not just hearing it, was a special experience again today. I know this because my husband is a musician, but with the Ka it's completely different again. To feel the vibration of your own Ka when others are playing is special.
The rhythm has made us partly a group. this is something that I miss so far. Each nationality keeps to itself - I don't exclude myself from this - and doesn't come into contact. I would so much like to know more about the other participants, to exchange ideas with them and get into the discussion of how they feel about being here and experiencing the foreign culture. Just be allowed to experience a different perspective. If language is a problem, we should find other ways to exchange.

Music soothes morals and puts you in a good mood. The joy of the children confirmed the joy of meeting in a climatic place.

Today we spent at school playing gho-ka, a traditional tune played on drums in Guadeloupe. We talked about music, melody, rhythm and played the drums. We spent the day in a very entertaining way, and at the end we met children from a nearby school, who felt the atmosphere of Gho-ka. At the end we had lunch and a delicious dessert in the school restaurant, a home-cooked local meal.

It was a pity for me today that I could not witness this experience. But sometimes it's just more important to listen to your body and give it the rest it needs.
It was good that I already had the opportunity to drum in a bar with locals on Saturday. i hope to be able to get back into it fully tomorrow.

Day by day I gain more and more, which fills the baggage of experience. Today I felt that little is needed for happiness. All you need is an instrument, a sense of heart rhythm and good fun guaranteed. I learned to play a new instrument and I will come back to it for sure! Through music, we express our emotions. Today, on my way, I met smiling children, I learned about their customs. We had a meal together, I discovered new flavours of the world.

Today the musical atmosphere allowed to release emotions without words, it was the power of communication. music can connect people all over the world, and the joy of children has spread to everyone.

I found it very interesting to get to know the 7 different rhythms of Gwo Ka. I really enjoyed playing the drum. It was fantastic to be there when the kids joined our GwoKa game and just started dancing. There were two special moments during this ceremony. A student stood in front of me and looked at me beggingly. He also wants to play the drum. I gave it to him immediately. Then I kept watching him: he couldn't get into the rhythm. His classmates quickly noticed this and replaced him. The second special encounter was with Edgar after the spectacle. He asked me how I found his pedagogy. I was a bit taken by surprise and apparently overwhelmed with this question. Was he asking me that because he knew I was a teacher? Did he want an answer or just start a conversation? Anyway... I found out that he has been running the association for 25 years and now wants to publish a book dedicating a page to each year of his life's work. I would be very interested in reading this book.

I learned to speak Finnish, Polish and Creol. Just a few sentences, of course. And of course I forgot about them again. Finnish left the greatest impression on me, as it is the language with which I had never had any contact before.
