So I've been really busy this last week, simultaneously delivering all online teaching for all my students and recording, editing and uploading helpful instructional videos to my new Youtube Distance Learning Channel. Thankfully, this coming week is spring break and I'll have a chance to breathe and catch up. I'm hoping my videos and information will be helpful to teachers, parents, and students who may be having a hard time learning from home. Feel free to share links or info with others.

One thing I do to make signing on and attending our online live Zoom class meetings fun is to host and hype up exciting mystery "field trips." On this last Fun Friday's Field Trip we got to go to an art gallery and home of a popular artist in San Francisco...I've uploaded the tour in 3 parts that are 12-14 min. each.

Also, I've created an art gallery for my class with its own art studio where kids can go online for really cool art ideas, learning activities, and to share their artistic creations. This gallery is constantly changing and will have featured artists and activities on Fun Fridays. More distance learning tips, tricks and videos coming later this week!

To check out our field trip or other resources, click to enter our art gallery below.

Can you find Todo?

My classroom theme is the Wizard of Oz and we have been learning about extreme weather including tornados. For my slides this week I will present a challenge to them that they have to find out where Todo is. Todo has been swept up in a tornado and can be found somewhere in the United States. To make sure they are going through my slides, I will insert one clue about Todo whereabouts on one of the slides each day of the week but to get the clue then have to solve a problem in google forms related to something that they have learned that day. If they get the answer, then I give them a clue. On Friday, they will get the last clue and guess where Todo can be found. This will be an answer that they have to submit in google forms so I can see who has been reading my slides. Then there will a prize for whomever got the answer or came closest to find out where Dorothy can find Todo. This will also help them with their geography skills some of which we have been learning in social studies.

For our Questa 4-8 P.E. classes, we are going to have a Zoom talent show. We know this isn't totally related to physical education but mental well being is so we are trying to offer positive activities to look forward to! We will post the assignment Monday and schedule them for Friday. We will have a Google Form sign up and depending on how many we get, we will host as many Zooms as needed. Students get up to 1 minute and can show artwork, physical talent, musical talent, share special knowledge...the options are limitless!

Students start the week by opening a scavenger hunt map that will take them through various slides and locations to uncover the codes needed to unlock the rooms. Once all are unlocked they will then get rewarded extra DOJO points. All the while, my students are getting familiar with some of our new programs or also verifying (to me) that they have opened the programs and registered.

But what about hooks or anything that can get our kid to our meetings? The numbers of kids choosing to involve themselves is low. My kids are either sleeping, reading, or playing video games online with their friends. It's tough to compete with that. We also don't know how the district wants us to handle grades--it is becoming an issue for high school.
