Debate Unit Reflection

I feel like I learned a lot about how to stand my ground and articulate my arguments. I learned how to come up with rebuttals really fast and I found out when I'm on the "hot seat" that my mind works faster.

I also learned how to listen to what the debater across from me is saying and twist their words to my own advantage while not helping the other side *cough* Hector *cough*.

I feel like I could've have better communicated with our team because it felt like we were all spewing our own disjointed claims without any coherance or set cadence.

If I were to give advice to those students it would be to get a lot of different points from a lot of different sources and not go to heavily into one claim. You should also write down all the points the opponent makes so you don't have to ask them what they said so you can make a rebuttal. And most importantly, be respectful to other side even if you completely disagree with their points.

I like books that have elements of fantasy and magic in them. I also prefer the main characters to be male as I can't seem to connect to female protagonists as much (though this is not always the case). I am also into swords and magic academy, like hogworts or smth :/

I think that the target audience for this book is teenagers. I think the author is trying very hard but it seems too stereotyped. In EVHS we don't really have a lot of people getting drunk, making out, and selling drugs. I was really surprised when her MOTHER took Addy for birth control even encouraging her to do it more. Icky.

I think that this story teaches us a lot about human nature. About how what people may seem to enjoy may actually be completely different from what they really think. We also learn that even though the characters should be mourning at the loss of human life they are actually feeling relieved that their secrets won't be held against them.

All 4 of the MC's were attending the funeral of Simon. They were then confronted by cops and questioned at the station. My favorite character right now is Nate, believe it or not, because he seems the most mature out of all of them. I don't like Browyns annoying attitude. Cooper seems like an OK dude but his dad, geez real nutcase there. Also Addy is the worst, she is a cheater and has a flimsy character.

I feel that since the beginning of the story Browyn and Nate have had the most character development since their interactions with each other. Addy exposing her cheating scandal to Jake didn't change all that much. We haven't been focusing as much on Cooper as we have the other characters so he hasn't changed much so far.

I think that in this story the setting of a classic stereotypical American high-school plays a big role in developing the conflict. We are introduced to character with such stark black and white personalities. This immediately sets aside the 4 main characters but as we go deeper in the story we realize they are all actually pretty similar. School is a very stressful place for some kids and the transition from a joyful school atmosphere to a living hell helps showcase the characters true heart.

In this chapter we hear a little bit about Nate and Bronwyns relationship. They seem to be getting closer and Brownwyn even picks up a phone that Nate leaves for her. They are also calling every night. Also Addy with the help of her sister who ironically got cheated on by her husband is slowly getting over Jake. We are seeing a lot more of Cooper and he is slightly suspicious since the evidence being posted against him is encrypted.

I think that the environment of the main character living in a low class ecomonic situation really helps with the plot. He is trying to balance out both money and relationships with his coworkers and family. The father not being in the picture also allows his mother to fund new love and be a support for the Mc.

I think that after the MCs falling out with his TM group members that the MC became more mature. He already was a little more mature than normal since he went to the army but after that incident he became less naive. He started taking videos of the mistreatment to prove his case and break free from his contract.

Today I read about how Chae decided to go on the stage of the masked singer and compete with one of his old rivals. He does that because his sister was being mocked because of him. He also decides to join a drama about a serial killer name Loiue that fell in love with the daughter of one of his past targets. The main thing I like about this story is how it literally is a fictional story about comprehension and understanding characters. Since he is an actor we get to listen to interesting stories and understand how characters think.

While Chae was participating in Masked Singer he also was studying to take the Bar exam because his hrandfather is an educative of Rome Law Firm. After all that he then decides to join a historical drama about a famous prince that sacrificed his life during the rebellion. Though on the first day of the shooting the main female lead didn't show up and tried using tears to manipulate Chae.

I think that Addy has changed a lot from when we first saw her. At first we saw her as a girl who just listened to her boyfriend Jake, always agreeing with him and never having an opinion. Though now she cut hair and has become her own person. When she met up with Jake she managed to defend herself and leave.

I really like how the story portrays Nate and his mothers relationship. It is very realistic unlike other stories. It is not some fairy tale reunion but an actual meeting between a former crackhead mother and a son that is over it all. I also think that Nates relationship with Bronwyn is what is keeping Nate afloat right now. Especially since they both confessed to each other.

I really like the new Cooper we see after it is revealed that he is gay. He always seemed plastic and one dimensional before. Now he is more natural and is even cracking funny jokes. The way he interacts with people is also more carefree as you can when the Bayview 4 metup. Though he does not have too many people to talk too after his sexyality was revealed. I think the main reason he is dealing with the situation so well is because he can rely on the Bayview 4 and Luis to support him, unlike his father.

Vanessa is a minor character who is mean to represent a certain theme. She represent society as a whole in the way that people will stick by you and like but as soon as you do something wrong they will abandon you. Vanessa was good friends with Addy but now she pushed Addy to the ground. She also was attracted to Cooper and tried to get closer, but as soon as she found out he was gay she bullied him instead of supporting him.

What is one strong idea that you didn't voice aloud?

I didn't talk about why Shakesspeare included Benvolio in the play. I said that Benvolio is a foil character and that he was meant to be a contrast to Tybalt. We are meant to compare the two and how they respond to situations. He is also used to foreshadow certain scenes. In the beggining of act 3 scene 1 he foreshadowed the brawl that took place.

Where there parts of the play you originally misunderstood that today's discussion helped clarify?

I originally misunderstood the 1968 version because I was kind of confused by them acting so comical. I thought they were just playing around, but apparently they were being serious. That's just how they acted back then. what I mistook as Tybalt being kind was actually him being arrogant.

On a scale if 1 to 10, how do you feel the discussion ran as a whole?

I think if I have to rate it I'd rate it at a 7. A lot of people had really good answers, but a lot of people were very reluctant to share. There were also a lot of people on thier phones and just copying the answers of the people next to them. Though for the positives I felt that there were a good amount of people who came up with very creative and analytical answers.

Jake is a minor character but the role he plays throughout the story directly influences the plot. He was the one who helped plant the phones in thier backpacks all along and he was the one who was writing those Tumblr posts. He aslo acted very normal after and that is the scariest part. He helped Simon plan his own death because of his feelings of anger towards Addy.

I think that the author's writing style is purposely suspenseful. We get so many POVs of different characters and such info. But we only get a very limited amount with info slowly being revealed throughout the chapters and when it is unveiled we can see all the signs in the beggining. We can see how each point connects to each other to form this story. I also think that the order in which the characters are seen and how long thier passage is depicts how important they are to the plot at the moment.

Society has a big pact on the character. Since the entire world is out to aquire his blood because of thier medicinal properties. He is being tossed around from different countries and being taken hostage by all sorts of terrorist groups. Society's greed for his blood and the secrets of his body have overrided the basic compassion for a fellow human. This has left serious physiological trauma to a young boy who doesn't even have his parents.

A minor character that is really important is one of his nurses. She is the first person to ever see him as a person and treat him gently. Her motherly aura seemed to be slow bringing the protagonist out of his shell even though he was still confined in a room forced to give out blood samples. She sneaked in books, manga, games, snacks or whatever else she could find. This also increased the quality of living for him. Though she died at the hands of a terrorist group who broke into the medical facility looking to kidnap the Mc. Her death brought grief to someone who never felt many emotions in his life. Even though he was able to bring his emotions back into his life he was also instilled with a new sense of hatred for all adults.

Pendragon Book #1 Focus Questions 5/2/22

I really like the way the author sequenced his text. We first hear about what happened from the Mc's perspective then we go to his friend's perspective and then back to his friends perspective. I like the change in the middle because it gives the author a chance to make a clean transition. We also get a break from the constant action.

I really like the author's writing style because it reminds me of Rick Riordan and the mc's humor reminds me of Percy Jackson. Since we are hearing directly from the main character we get to hear how he thinks and we can obviously sense that he is less mature. His funny personality is a direct contrast from his crazy and terrifying circumstances. This helps lighten the tension and make the read more enjoyable.
