They first fought the Ten Year's War between 1868 and 1878. In 1895, Cuban rebels rose up again under the leadership of Jose Marti. Many Americans supported the cause of the Cuban rebels and wanted the United States to intervene. When conditions in Cuba worsened in 1898, President William McKinley sent the U.S. battleship Maine to Cuba to help protect American citizens and interests in Cuba. On February 15, 1898, a huge explosion caused Maine to sink in Havana Harbor. Although no one was sure exactly what caused the explosion, many Americans blamed Spain. I learned that this topic is in a lot more complex than what people would think because it isn't just a war fought between two countries it's a war fought about something because one country wants it and the other one doesn't want to give it up, this changed my thoughts on the topic because now I was more intrigued and want to keep learning more about it because of all of the intricate things that went into the war and why it happened. The United States occupied Cuba and took possession of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines, because they won the war.
