There are six major ethnicities in Moldova, Moldovan: 75.1%, Romanian: 7%, Ukrainian: 6.6%, Gagauz: 4.6%, Russian: 4.1%, Bulgarian: 1.9%. Moldovans occupy most of the country and are spread throughout it, but in the North and Northeast (Near or along the Ukrainian border), there are large areas occupied by people who identify as Ukrainian. They see themselves as an independent state from Moldova, however globally they are recognized as part of Moldova. Transnistria wanted to break away because they were a mostly Russian speaking region, and felt they weren't being represented well by the Moldovan majority.
