This book entails a rebellious little boy named Max who has a wild imagination. After sent to bed without supper, his imagination runs wild and he journeyed to a new, different, and exciting world filled with adventures and different creatures. When teaching this book in a classroom setting, the teacher could ask the students if they have ever felt like Max. One activity that the students could do is to brainstorm and draw different creatures that are similar to the creatures and monsters in the book. Sendak, Maurice. Where the Wild Things Are.

This thrilling and heartwarming story of Christmas, adventure, believing, and friendship is a staple in many homes. The story about a child who wakes up to a train in his front yard, climbs aboard to go meet Santa Claus, and eventually believes in Christmas, is a true timeless tale. To incorporate this book into a lesson, a teacher could show the movie trailer or even take the class on a field trip to ride a Polar Express train.

In contrast to children's books with other children, this story contains an adventurous story about a family of ducks. Making their home in Boston, they go through many hardships and raise their ducklings as best they can. This book could be used for interdisciplinary connections, in which the students could read it in english and complete an activity and then learn about ducks and their nesting habits in science. It could also be paired with math, where the students could count the number of ducklings and/or the number of places they migrate to. McCloskey, Robert, et al. Make Way for Ducklings. Viking Press, 2016.

Set in Paris, this story entails a little, adventurous girl slips and falls off a bridge ad a dog jumps in and rescues her. After much confrontation and stress, the dog comes and goes only to stay and have puppies for each of the girls. This story is an excellent example of sharing and caring for pets. Teachers can read aloud to the students and then complete worksheets on Madeline's story and on sharing. Bemelmans, Ludwig. Madeline's Rescue, Picture Puffin, 1977.

A heartwarming story of a young boy who plays in the snow for the whole day. The story tells details of his day and his snowy adventures. Being a diverse book, it is good to model how children can have fun while still learning. An activity that a teacher could make would be to have a real snow day or to make snowflake cutouts and hang them in the classroom. Keats, Ezra Jack. The Snowy Day.

This fable is about a magical, protective hermit and a little, meek mouse. When threatening animals approach the mouse, the hermit changes the mouse's form many times but he is not grateful. The hermit changes the tiger back into a mouse and continues pondering about life. This would be a thoughtful lesson for children to be grateful for who they are and not try to change. Brown, Marcia. Once a Mouse …: a Fable Cut in Wood.

This story is about a father and son who leave home one night and trek to find an owl. It is a heartwarming tale about the relationship between a father and daughter and tells of their nightly adventures to see an owl. The story has a certain simplicity to it which can be related to this adventure and to the relationship. This story is another example of interdisciplinary connections, in which the children could learn facts about owls in science to learn more about the animal in the tale. Some activities the children could partake in include painting an owl scene, making owl calls, or pretending to have a nightly trek of their own. Yolen, Jane. Owl Moon.

In one of Aesop's Fables, brought to life by Jerry Pinkney's picture book, it enhances the beloved story of a friendship between a lion and a mouse. The mouse and lion become friends when the lion is tied up by poachers and the mouse nibbles the rope, and sets him free. This is a great lesson for kids to work together to reach one common goal.

In this touching story about a friendship between a rabbit and a mouse, it states of the troubles and escapades that they start. In this story, Rabbit and Mouse fly a plane into a tree and use many other animals' help to retrieve it. However after many attempts and finally removing it, Rabbit flies it right back into the tree but Mouse says that he loves him anyways. This is a model story for students to identify friendships, teamwork, and forgiving others. One example of an activity would be to create little model or paper airplanes using teamwork.

This funny story is about a little fish who stole a big fish's hat. He swims and swims and swims to an area where he thinks he will not be seen but the big fish ends up retrieving his own hat back. In this story, children are taught that while stealing something may be perceived as humorous, it is not proper and in the end, the rightful owner takes his things back. Students could create new hats for the fish or interview the author and ask his opinions and why he wrote the book. Klassen, Jon, et al. This Is Not My Hat.
