These include taking a deeper look at the Standards and prerequisite skills, using data to guide instruction, and determining what this type of instruction (whole group, small group, etc.) will look like to move forward.

Additionally, using resources such as the Coherence Map can make this Approach easier to navigate.

It is possible for our students to succeed.

I think when we talk about unfinished learning we make an assumption that we need to teach everything that wasn't covered prior to teacing new content. That truly is an impossible task. We need to increase our ability to assess what students know so that we can better diagnose gaps and their impact on a student's ability to grapple with grade level standards.

The Coherence Map is a solid tool for build teacher understanding of not only the standards at their grade level, but how they link to the previous grade and upcoming grade. This work is definitely best done in groups so that common understandings, tools, and assessments are developed. In a virtual world it could also be helpful to work in groups so that teachers can share the effort of supporting students for whom the "bridge is truly up."

This quote was so eye opening and truly resonated with me. As teachers of math we often feel students need to demonstrate an understanding or prerequisite skills in order to move forward in their learning but these skills do not need to be taught in isolation or master before being able to access and engage in grade-level work.

This quote resonated with me because there is no "one size fits all" model to unfinished learning. It is important to meet students where they are and provide them with experiences, knowledge and support.
