The rusty red color of Mars, the fourth planet from the sun, is well known. The atmosphere of the cold, arid Red Planet is extremely thin. However, the dusty, (as far as we can tell) dead planet is everything from boring. Regolith, the loose dust and rock that covers Mars' surface, contains iron-rich minerals that give the planet its distinctive brilliant red apperance. According to NASA, the soil turns red because the iron minerals oxidize, or rust.
