Almost everything we use or wear everyday comes from a different country. We buy goods from other countries because of globalization. This is the development of global society. Some examples of globalization is our phones or electronic devices could've been made in China, the clothes you're wearing right now could've been made in Mexico or Madagascar, etc. In this chapter there will be description of one common globalized product which is the sneaker. Sneakers show the growth and impact of globalization, the process of the making of the sneakers which involves several countries and steps.

Sand shoes, trainers, tennis shoes, runners, sneakers. They were made in the mid 1800's for sports such as running, tennis and croquet. The sneaker was made with a cotton canvas, a rubber sole, and they came in various styles, colors, etc. After the 1950's these sneakers became a lot more than sports shoes but became used in people's casual/everyday lives. This has also come in place for people's fashion. Today's sneakers are both used by athletes but also by everyone else. These have benefited other activities as well, and has grown in fashion appeal.

The upper top of a common sneaker is made of natural materials - that can be made or found in the United States along with other livestock locations. The midsole of your sneakers are made from oil based materials which are found in most or all oil rich countries. The outer sole is made from the sap of rubber trees from tropical countries such as Thailand, Brazil, Malaysia and Indonesia, but today's most common sneakers are made from coal and oil produced in Taiwan factories.

There is a lot of work and steps in the process of making sneakers, a single sneaker can have as much as 50 pieces. Along with having over 120 people to produce the final product. In the 1960's sneakers were being produced by the US, Germany and Britain but by 1970's the sneakers became much more intricate. The styles increased which also increased the price and manufacturing. This became too much for the US to continue to fund and produce which led to it moving to countries like South Korea and China which had a large pool of low wage workers, lots of factories, and ports for raw shipping.

Typically sneakers are sent by a container ship from Asia which is primarily used because of the cheap costs. The trip from Asia to the United States is approximately two weeks, the shoes are put in large, waterproof containers that easily stack on deck. This container ship can ship over 8,000 boxes of these boxes. Afters making it to the United States these sneakers are often put on a train which goes to the most popular distributing locations in the nation. Then the sneakers are distributed to about 18,000 stores in the US. By the time a pair of sneakers makes it from an Asian factory to your home, it may have traveled more than 7,000 miles.
