Both Type 1 and 2 diabetes have a familial tendency (inherited) but have different etiologies. Type 2 is associated with obesity which was my group's (Group R) health outcome, and about 25% of pregnant patients with gestational diabetes will develop Type 2 diabetes later in life. Other than obesity, additional biological risks listed here are inclusive (blood lipid levels include high cholesterol, and impaired glucose tolerance is more commonly known as prediabetes), and Type 2 has become a major health risk especially with the increase in obesity worldwide. I enjoyed hearing the NP talk about this health issue especially as it relates to the consequence of kidney disease which is also increasing; currently, about 33% of all dialysis patients have end stage renal disease secondary to diabetes worldwide. About half of the top 10 states with the highest obesity rate are located in southeastern US, and so, correlate with high national Type 2 diabetes rates. Concerning the structural risk factor of "non-smoking regulation", I'm thinking this may mean that those who cannot smoke eat more(?) and thus would be more likely to develop obesity. With the increase in risk factors noted in racial/ethnic minorities like hypertension and obesity, non-Hispanic blacks are twice as likely to die of Type 2 diabetes complications as whites. I am looking forward to hearing about Team A's interventions for prevention.
