In the book Monte Cristo Dant'es was considering to starve himself to death and before he decided that he thought he could just hang himself. Because he was lonely he had a chance he could kill himself so he had a higher risk for that. Also when he was there in prison he couldn't remember if he had gotten any sleep the night before he just couldn't remember. In the text he is restricted to fly away and be free.
