Last month we added a new child to our preschool. She was a 4-year-old who was removed from her home and placed with a foster family. The child was behind socially and emotionally But did rather okay otherwise. The Foster family was welcoming and it was happy to place the child in a center. They told us how they thought this would be good for her and that this was their first foster child. After a few weeks of the child being in the center, we noticed that she didn't share toys and would get rather mad when others wanted to play next to her. The child would try to take as many toys as she could for herself to play with and didn't want anybody else to touch them. As this issue came about, we decided to talk to the Foster family about it after school. We told them our concerns and the problems that were happening during the day. The Foster family explained to us that she had many insecurities because she came from a bad home with addicted parents that didn't let her have much. The Foster family knew this was an issue and asked if we had any advice. After figuring out why the problem occurred we talked about a few different strategies and how we can work on her sharing skills and social skills during class and at home. We are currently still working with this child and she has improved but still has many things to work on. I believe she will get better as the year goes on as she addresses and gets used to her new surroundings.

Family Involvement: Family Game Night

A scenario that first comes to mind with me would be to have open houses for families to come into the classroom. We could call it “family game night” and families can experience working in the classroom and have an understanding of where their child is learning. I think that if a program had a family game night once a month for giving parents a chance to get comfortable with coming into the classroom and give parents that work all the time a chance to make at least on game night. The game night would introduce families and give them a chance to create relationships. I think lessons that would be learned would be what types of games and if we wanted to provide food or not during this time. Something that I think would need to be done differently would be making sure that the primary teacher or classroom helper move around the room. We want to make sure that we are having conversations with all the parents instead of sitting with a select few. This scenario would help students/families that might be having a hard time with school/work. We want families to feel welcome into the classroom and having family game nights would be a great way of including all families to come into our classroom.

Family Involvement

I thought I would share a scenario that I am currently involved in. One of my preschoolers from last year was enrolled to go to kindergarten at a different school (where is older siblings attend). We had the older siblings at our school until they were old enough to transfer so we are close with the family and know them well. A few years ago the parents went through a pretty tough divorce. The kids went from having a stable home where they were use to routine and very involved parents to being shuffled all over the place and around parents who struggled to get along. I had a hard time getting the parents involved with their preschooler last year, as they were both working a lot and trying to navigate life after divorce. To add to the families traumas this child was diagnosed with leukemia this fall. He hasn't been in school as they were trying to figure out his diagnosis and the path they would need to take. Now in a little bit of a routine he is attending my kindergarten class; we have small classes and aides who will be able to try and help him accomplish some of his kindergarten goals. I had a phone meeting with mom prior to his enrollment, made a schedule for when he needs to be virtual and then we met in person to talk. They would really like him to be able to go to first grade next year but he will need a lot of home support in order to try and catch up to his peers. Knowing the home support he had last year, I am wondering if he will get it know? In the next few weeks I will be focusing on family involvement with this child and trying to work together to accomplish this child's goals. So I don't know yet as we are just getting started. Lessons from the past have taught me that I need to be kind, compassionate but honest with the parents, and set goals that are achievable.
