In this answer we will be descussing how an oxbow lake is formed.
An oxbow lake is one of the features of the old stage of a river. It occurs because of the rivers load eroding the river into meanders (curves in the river) to the point where they curve into a loop. Then eventually the curves grow very close to each other until the river decides to take the straighter path and cut off the loop into an oxbow lake. It happens in a rivers meander( the rivers bends ) it erodes due to hydraulic action and abrasion to the point where it touches the other point of the river . The deposition covers the curve in the river and because of this the meander is abandoned, because of this it forces the river to loose its curve forcing it to move a little bit straighter again
