Alphabet principle is understanding that letters represent sounds and that those can then be used as you're reading and writing. Alphabet knowledge is all about recognizing letters and identifying letters (uppercase and lowercase). This is important for early readers because it creates the basis of their understanding of how to read and write. Being able to distinguish letters and being able to recognize that letters make sounds sets them up for being able to start understanding phonics and so on.

Every Thursday, I am with Kindergarten, and one of their favorite activities is Bingo. Bingo is great because it is super easy to set up but its also super easy to change what material they are learning. I would create a vowel team Bingo!

Vowel Team Sort:

Give students word cards with vowel teams. Have them sort the cards under headers for each vowel team. Also using matching picture cards for support. This helps students recognize patterns and practice vowel sounds.
